I'm a long-time car buff, former mechanic and former racer, but 1st time Bimmer owner. I'm amused at how much chatter there is on whether this is an M, or that isn't an M. Did the M division design, build or just suggest each piece? Did M engineers actually touch a part or merely point at it? Did they use a capital "M" in it's distinction or a lowercase "m"?

I'm in love with the M235i. It's one of the baddest, most fun cars I've driven in a long time. Virtually all of the reviews of this car by people that have driven it are very positive. If the M badge was removed from all 16 places, it would still be one trick ride.

BMW may build a version of this car that's lighter, with a more powerful motor, a tighter suspension and fatter tires that will further improve the already ridiculous specs on this puppy. That's awesome. You can squeeze another 50+ hp out of an already brilliant engine? Bring it.

I could care less which division touches which part, as long as the results are amazing.
religion? Where did you pull that out from? If you are faithful to your wife or girlfriend, does that denote a religious tone?
No it doesn't. One can be faithful to certain tenets, to a concept. Even to a dogma (referencing the "no dogma" spiel that has been given).

I've yet to drive the M235i, and I have no doubt that it a fun car. I have driven the 135i, and chances are I bet the M235i performs better...it should.
Especially denoting your enthusiasm (hyperbolic in nature?).

What I do suspect is this, things ebb and flow, and as BMW focuses on Mass Appeal (like the Gangstar song), it seems to lose something, as does anything when you spread things thinly. Even it's supposedly hardcore offerings. Some people notice it. Others may not. Others don't give a damn, as the cars have always and will always be fun. All of these are ok, because if they keep people happy, hey money in their pockets.
And let's not forget, they still produce winning race cars. And awesom sport bikes. But, I digress.

I hope the M2 or whatever it will be called is a success. But, what I am really getting at, is that it has it's own identity. One aside from the M3/M4.
Now, what would garner that? Is it wheels, flares, tires? Is it suspension from the M3/M4? Is it a tune of it's current engine? Is it a turbo 4 putting out 360-380 hp, and matching torque figures? Or is it all or a combo of all of those?
These are driving questions.

They should at least make it an M, upturned grille , mirrors , kidney grille , aerodynamics and all.

The clues are left but they continuously run into doors.

Hey Scott, another request for M2 in case the boys back home are taking notes:

A number of us yanks would appreciate some additional suspension adjust-ability. My top two would be adjustable swaybars, like on your M235i Race, and more camber adjustment. This would be ideal for those of us that autocross in SCCA, or the guys that like track days, as it would let us dial the car in better for the stickier tires we tend to run. It probably wouldn't cost BMW much, and would get a lot of respect from the serious driver set here.

If you wanted to hit it out of the park you could add adjustable spring perches to let us corner weight or raise and lower the car like the GT3's got, but that's clearly a nice to have, so you might save the money.

My $.02, thanks for listening.

I'd like to see a render that is based on the M235i Racing with the skirts and fenders sculpted into the body like the 1M.

Its important not to give everything away at once. Especially if further progress is possible.

have we seen these?

i like parts of it....although it still looks a bit too plain M235i for the front end for my tastes. an OK rendering, but didn't change the grille or the front enough for an M model, IMO. Probably need to remove those fugly M235i wheels too! ick.

It will have a real M-diff (electronically controlled clutch pack), instead of the optional torque biasing diff.

They haven't announced anything, but if we look at other M-cars, we usually see:
  • M engine (looks like M tuned rather than bespoke in the case of the M2)
  • M suspension
  • M brakes (option $$$)
  • M differential (limited slip)
  • Different wheels
  • Wider track
  • Larger fender flares
  • More aggressive aero front and rear
  • More aggressive exhaust
  • Exclusive paint colors

Still hoping for an S20, but would probably be cost prohibitive.

If it weighs 100lb less than the F80, great.

I want to ask one more thing.Does the f30 328i and f80 m3 use same chassis ? Or they built from different materials.I think their rigidity shouldn't be same.

Yes and no. The chassis design is the same, but the F80 uses additional CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) components.

That I am aware of, this includes: the roof, trunk, drive shaft, and front strut tower brace. Only the strut tower brace will significantly effect chassis rigidity; the roof could have some impact, but I'm not sure it's load-bearing. I wouldn't discount that effect either. Strut tower bracing is very important for maintaining front suspension geometry under high turning load.

At the press launch for the 435i in Lisbon, BMW said that the F32 has something like 40% more stiffer chassis(rigidity) than the F30. It's one reason why BMW's two door coupes always "feel" more sporty.

Its also why a BMW Coupe always has a B-Pillar.

Interesting. In the E46 days though, weren't the Sedans actually stiffer though?
