LOL! I think in typical BMW fashion the information out there is scattered, inconsistent and not timely. If what some here are saying is true (i.e. cars at VPC are getting airbag parts replaced and released for sale, production back at Leipzig has resumed with the updated parts, and cars on the lots are scheduled to get repaired) then the flyer and date of May 27th is probably accurate.
I bet the July time frame is more for sold cars already in the wild, which are lower priority for BMW as they're already sold. Once the recall parts are more readily available, they'll send notices out to the owners to bring their cars in for the replacement. BMW's most urgent priority are the cars at the ports and dealership lots - cuz these are inventory in their financials that need to be sold yesterday for their profits and revenue. Not to mention the costs to store and have the vehicles sit. Now this is all my own conjecture, and somewhat optimistic reasoning that the flyer is accurate and BMW is high tailing their asses to get these cars available for sale.... when in doubt follow corporate behavior.

That's my feeling too. We know that production has started up again on the affected lines, so there is a fix being applied. The announcement I posted earlier came from my dealership Sales Manager, and it doesn't surprise me that it hasn't filtered down to the BMWUSA call centers. Also, for anyone whose car is stranded at the dealership rather than the VPC, it's worth noting that the cars are marked "no sale" rather than "no drive". In theory the dealership might be able to offer you an "extended test drive" or a "loaner" for a couple of days in order to get a taste before the parts are in.

I believe they are corrected ones. The recall notice stated the affected cars were built through 4/30/2019, which implies those after are in good order. From a more practical point of view.. why would you continue to build cars with a known bad part? The cost to correct erodes your profits. Also, modern just in time manufacturing practices means that there is no more than a days worth of parts in inventory on the assembly line. It should not take long to get the corrected parts on line and into new builds. Just my 2 cents :-)

I saw in another thread that an ED M2 had the fix made in time for the delivery, which gives me hope.

BMW 440I
I am supposed to pick up my 2020 BMW 440i on May 13th. The dealership will not release my car due to this recall. I called the dealer serval times, and they still have no any updates for the fix.
Anyone have recent updates? Thanks |

Best unconfirmed estimate is May 27th from another member though my salesman could not confirm that and neither could the performance center

Today, the BMW website is finally updated for this recall. At this point, I have no idea what to do except waiting, and July seems just far away. "How will I be informed of this Safety Recall? You will receive a letter in July via First Class mail advising you of this Safety Recall. Depending upon parts availability, this letter may request you to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW center to have this Safety Recall performed." |

I am paying my insurance already for the car even thought it is sitting in the dealership and being lonely.....I am shocked how BMW handled this. It has been 2 weeks since the original 'no sale' recall on May 3rd. Last edited by jwan5998; 05-17-2019 at 10:56 PM.. |

And did you purchase/lease the car already? If so, I guess there was no stop sale on your car or the recall hit right after you signed the docs and they held the car. Either way, I'd call your insurance agent and explain - I'm sure they can hold the insurance coverage until the car is fixed and you have in your possession.

This is a super strange experience. I paid in full and signed the docs, registration and everything. The recall happened May 3rd but the dealer did not catch it until I was picking up the car. |

If the parts really do start arriving on the 27th, and they really are going to prioritize sold cars first, then it shouldn't be bad at all. Another week or two isn't that bad.
The original recall was for 11,000+ cars or something, but the affected number according the flyer is under 500 (unfortunately, all newer 2 series). I can see how getting 11k airbags (or 22k if it's both sides) would be complicated and may take until July. If it's only 500 cars, it shouldn't be that bad hopefully (and that May 27th date seems more realistic). |

I think that's the primary question - is 5/27 official and true.
