One of the few minor defects on the 2017 M2 I acquired a few weeks ago was two small scratches on the rear view mirror, which were just annoying enough from the driver's position that I needed to do something about it.
After checking the classifieds here and not finding anything, I decided to hit up ebay and see what I could find. Came across a more modern looking mirror off a 2019 X3 with the same features as the one in my M2 (auto-dimming, homelink, alarm LED) for less than a like-new replacement, and decided to give it a shot. The part # I used is 51166995975. After receiving the new mirror, I removed the stock mirror and immediately noticed that the mounts and connectors were different. No problem, I'll just swap them over, as the # of pins and wire colors were identical. The stock M2 mirror uses a 10-pin connector (5x2), with the following arrangement: 3: +12v (red) 6: homelink (white/blk) 9: alarm (blue) 10: ground (brown) The X3 mirror uses a 6-pin connector (6x1), with the following arrangement: 1: +12v (red) 2: homelink (white) 3: alarm (blue) 4: ground (brown) As the mounts are slightly different, both in attachment to the windshield and cutout for the wiring connector, you'll need to swap them. De-pin both connectors (opening the locking tabs on the connectors, and then lightly pressing on the tab on each pin to allow it to be removed. You'll need to do this twice for each pin as there's 2 stops/lock points. Once you have the connectors removed, move the wiring out of the way and pull off the mount/ball from the socket in the mirror. I laid the mirrors face down on a towel folded over many times, sprayed a tiny bit of GDL (garage door lube) on the ball, and used another towel to grip the mount and pull **hard**. That pop you hear when it releases will almost certainly momentarily cause you to think you broke the mirror. After removal, move the mount from the stock mirror over to the new one, route the wiring up through it, and press down hard. Another pop, another moment of panic. After you gather your wits, route the wiring up thru the front exit of the mount, and re-pin the stock connector. Start all 4 pins in their correct slots with the correct orientation, then push forward together, taking care not to jam/break any of the pins (I did this, and had to cut/splice in one from the stock mirror). Re-engage the locking tabs, and then reinstall in the car. In addition to being an aesthetic upgrade, the X3 mirror provides a slightly wider FOV, and the homelink buttons are IMO much easier to push. I'm happy with the result. My stock mirror is listed in the classifieds for anyone who might want it for parts cheers, Matt Last edited by Matt Devo; 07-27-2020 at 09:23 AM.. |

I've always hated the narrow FOV produced by the OEM mirror in comparison to other BMW's I've owned previously but never thought there was an easy direct swap until I stumbled upon this post. Going to give this a shot here soon once I find a reasonably priced X3 mirror on eBay. Thanks for the write up man, much appreciated!

Super useful info thank you! If I am reading realoem correctly, referenced against my VIN lookup, looks like I would need 51169476753
For vehicles with Alarm system and Interior/outside mirror with auto dip and Interior mirror with automatic-dip S302A=Yes S430A=Yes S431A=Yes I have all of those plus anti-dazzle.. For vehicles with Integrated universal remote control and High-beam assistant S319A=Yes S5ACA=Yes So I think that all boils down to.. 51169476753.. I think..

I struck gold and found what appears to be the correct G2X/G8X mirror for my F87 on German ebay!
They wanted 450 euro for it, offered 200 and they accepted! Thank you for figuring all.of this out! Figure worst case scenario even if this mirror doesn't work out, I should be able to resell easy at break even price or better.

Thanks for posting this or I would still be off hating my mirror! Your instructions were dead on and I followed your lead. Well done, thanks again!

Stumbled across P/N 51162471107, which appears to be an official OEM option for frameless G-series style mirror for F series vehicles (including F22, which I assume will work for our cars). If you do a quick search on google you will also find the installation pdf.
Is it just me or is this mirror even more "frameless" looking? It seems from some pictures online there's less black bezel than the ones mentioned in this thread. |

I will take pictures tomorrow day time so you can view the mirror. Honestly as far as tips, its crazy easy. Open the plastic covers, I used my fingers with pressure and a plastic trim tool; pull plastics aside, unplug the mirror connector, then slide old mirror straight down with a bit of force, mine slid right off. New mirror matched up in pins so I just plugged it in, and slid it back straight up and in with a bit of force until it clicked in (took maybe 2-3 times as I was afraid to go too hard). Put plastic covers back in and voila! All in all 10 mins top ** added a screen shot of where to order and Part supplied PDF FYI they ship insane fast got stateside in 2-3 days max! |
