Final Race of the Season - A Wet and Dreary Day

Final Race of the Season - A Wet and Dreary Day

I was invited to attend the final race of the CJ Super Race season, held at AMG's only course in Yongin (right next to Everland) and I was questioning my attendance while I was driving there because it started raining.... hard.

The track is privately owned now, by AMG, although they only signed I think a 2 or 5 year lease so we'll see if they keep it or not. It's also apparently the only AMG branded track in the world. Anyway, it's also adjacent to a sizeable theme park so I'm sure they love the noise associated with the track

Upon arrival the weather had turned to a drizzle so I had some hopes that the rain would hold off.

This track was set up knowing more people come since it's closer to Seoul than Inje (the previous track) so they had a ton of booths for people to peruse through, go carts for kids, car displays, etc. They had a BMW M setup where if you're a BMW driver you can get free coffee/drinks and watch the race from the balcony - although it's probably more enjoyable in the dry. Would have taken more pictures of the whole setup but

Not long after arrival the team staged the cars to go out to the start line for the photos and all that jazz. It started sprinkling so it was a bit concerning.

Last minute prep included ceramic coating the windshield...

As we got out on the track it really started to rain. My main job was to hold the umbrella for the photographer, super important I know... Soon I'll start getting sponsorships right???

I thought they'd hold off on the race if the weather got bad but I was wrong, they decided to start anyway. The rain was so bad I wasn't about to be outside, so I went back to our tent and we watched live on Naver...

Here's a video of the entire race, the race starts at 13 minutes in.

It was obvious who had the skill driving in the rain and who didn't. Our team leader again went from the back of the pack and finished 2nd, while a guy on the other team ended up gaining a major lead and finished the race 54 or so seconds ahead of everyone else.

Unfortunately... Not everything went smoothly. During qualifying the day before one of our team members lightly brushed the wall, bad enough that he had to enter the car through the passenger side in order to get in. Well he ended up crashing really, really hard into the barrier and totaled his car. Remember, there is no track insurance and everyone is racing their personal car... Someone from the other team also spun and bounced off the wall but his car is at least fixable.

Most importantly, while the car is totaled the driver is safe and fine - testament of modern safety - he was taken to the ER as a precaution but he got out of the car on his own and was released same day with just some bruises.

After the race and seeing the podium I had to go home, it was so cold/wet and my feet were wet that I couldn't stick around lol. Last race we had an inside space but this time it was a tent, so next time I'll just bring warmer socks haha

This is a random side note, but I was expecting to at least get a track day in before the end of the season but alas it wasn't in the cards. I was going to join during a McLaren day at Inje but the weather turned and I didn't go. Hopefully I can get out in March and go around the track and try the car out. At this point it barely gets above freezing during the day, so even driving to work on my PSS's is a handful - I plan to take the bus on snow days.

Car Washes - Oh how I wish I had a driveway

Car Washes - Oh how I wish I had a driveway

I really wish that I had my own driveway but unfortunately I live in an apartment tower and they reeally frown on trying to wash your car in their basement parking structure so there are a ton of self car washes that have popped up over the past few years! I generally go at night that way I don't have to wait or I don't feel rushed to finish.

Foam washes have become more popular so now at a lot of self car washes there is even a foam cannon option with a sprayer and everything - although I don't use it because I don't know what kind of soap it is... Most places will have an attachment where you can attach your own foam cannon to the pressure washer and use that, although I have the piece I need on order for this kind of pressure washer otherwise I'd use mine. For now, it's a simple bucket wash.

Self car washes also have underbody spray and some even have this "wax rain" but I don't use that. The main reason for using self car washes is the pressure washer and the vacuum cleaner, otherwise I bring all my own stuff with me!

I'm excited to get my foam cannon working, especially now that it's so cold it lessens the time my hands spend in a bucket of cold water LOL. I'll post in a week or two how the new attachment works out!

I ordered a M2C from Steve from Kolon as well, should be here sometime in the next few months. Definitely learned a lot from reading your thread! Thanks for all the detail and pictures. Keep it up! I hope they don't drill like 10 holes in my bumper when I get the car... debating whether I should just get the Korean plates to avoid the unecassary drilling. Did you find any good places in Korea that does PPFs (preferably Suntek Ultra or Xpel Ultimate) and hopefully doesn't cost an arm and a leg? The streets suck here...

Oh really? Awesome! So you'll be M2C number 2 in Korea! Lol. I'm guessing you're also down in the Ptk area? If you ever want to meet up and see the car so you know what you bought let me know and we can grab lunch or something.

Yeah we have some good places that do PPF, I can give you some recommendations.

It has to be drilled no matter what. They even drill holes in the Mclarens out here. Tell Steve you want Korean plates. Get them to put that in the order now. The benefit is also when you go to the states you can have a euro vanity plate instead of the huge ass US spec plate.

Tried getting a under bumper mount for a mclaren and was told it was not legal and it had to be drilled directly to the bumper... zzzzzz

That sucks... must be a Korea specific procedure.. Thanks for the info. Just gonna go with the Korean plates since it seems like the least problematic route.

Let's Darken Those Windows

Let's Darken Those Windows

I'm behind on updates, sorry about that!

Back towards the end of October I got my windows tinted. Dark tint is *technically* illegal, but it's never enforced (remember, no real police to speak of) so I can get as low as like 5% all around and nobody cares. But, as we all know at night you literally can't see anything out of 5%, so I definitely didn't want to do that. So I was thinking 35-40%, but the salesman talked me into 20% because I guess he figured everyone wants tint as dark as possible right? So we left my car there only to get 4 blocks away and realize wait a minute, 20% is REALLY dark so I switched to 40%. The front windshield is 70%.

I originally found a place that used Konica Minolta, but once we got there it was Haverkamp. Apparently Konica Minolta has been having quality issues, so many tint shops have switched over to Haverkamp.

I ended up going with 70% front windshield and 40% side and rear, with Haverkamp's ceramic window tint.

On to the final results!

Overall I'm extremely happy! Although I probably should have gone with 35%, I'm fine with it being a bit see through. It's not so light that you can see everything, but not so dark that you literally can't see anything. Good enough for me!

First Meeting of our Local M2 Owner's Club

First Meeting of our Local M2 Owner's Club

Last month was our first ever meeting for our local M2 Owner's club. It's 3 right now but we're looking to grow to 5 really soon, possibly 7 if we find the contact info of two others we've seen in town!

We started with lunch then went to a local car wash.

Now that it's so cold (avg temp is like -4C) it's hard to do stuff but hopefully once it's warmer we'll get some drives in. We're also currently searching for a local indoor carwash LOL

January Shop Visit

January Shop Visit

Since it's been so unbearably cold recently I haven't done much other than just drive the car when I have to! Since I had a day off on Monday I met up with some other M2 friends and we visited our friend's BMW performance shop. None of us had plans to do any work there, just visit and see how things were going, but one of the guys decided to buy and install Ohlins + 10mm spacers right then and there LOL. Ohlins pricing in Korea is more expensive than in the US, but labor+spacers were thrown in for free so all in all a pretty good deal!

First things first, an oil change. We feel it's better to get it done at an independent shop than at the dealer because while our cars are covered under warranty and supposedly include free oil changes, we don't get that at Korean dealers we still have to pay! So might as well do it ourselves....

He also just recently installed an Active Autowerks exhaust, so he wanted it adjusted a little bit while it was on the lift.

At the same time the shop was getting ready for a tire mounting machine and wheel balancer so they were in the process of moving everything off of the wall so they would have room for it, as a result the shop was a mess LOL

Around this time we were talking our friend into buying Ohlins, he went from never wanting to change the suspension to handing over his credit card in about an hour. LOL

Finished product!

So this is a moderate drop with 10mm spacers on all 4 corners. I think it totally changes the look of the car and makes me excited for when I install Ohlins on my M2C. I'm currently waiting for my wheels to come in and when they do I'll be installing my Ohlins as well!

As an aside, I had the distinct pleasure of filling up on the Korean economy

.....At the equivalent of $5.55/gallon. Yikes!

Impromptu Photoshoot

Last week I drove around around 1AM to take some pictures. I am definitely an amateur know-nothing but I think some of them turned out okay. I recently changed cameras so I'm still getting used to it.

Since it's butt-cold outside right now (think -0C every day, -8C at night) it makes washing the car pretty difficult. As a result you do what you can to find the best solution. We've been messing around a bit with a few places to find one that's best, and here are two I've tried. The first one is in an older building but the entire thing is enclosed. They didn't have warm water for the wash buckets though.

PROS: Entirely indoors, reasonably priced foam cannon, separate areas for wash/dry.

CONS: It gets pretty misty indoors when all the wash bays are occupied, lots of people go so it gets crowded and you feel rushed, narrow alleyways in the building have some blind corners, and the water for the wash bucket wasn't warm.

The second place that I went to last night was not entirely inside. You wash your car outside and then move your car inside to dry. I went later to this one rather than during the day to avoid the rush of people who wash on the weekend.

PROS: The indoor "dry/vacuum" area was actually pretty warm. It's run by folks who seem to be enthusiasts, they were interested in the car. All of the pressure washers had attachments for your own foam cannon which was cool (most places don't.) They also have their own store so if you forgot something you can buy it right then and there instead of going somewhere else. Ultimately it's a clean place and I think this is the one I'll be going back to.

CONS: Foam and water are expensive. $3 for 3 minutes for water, $3 for 90 seconds of foam. Wash area is outside (but covered) so in super cold weather it makes you want to rush a bit while cleaning.

This coming Monday I will be swapping out the suspension, painting the muffler, and poooossibly installing spacers. I'll update this thread next week with pictures from that!

Really enjoying your thread! I used to live in Seoul way back, so it's been cool seeing your pics and the local BMW car scene. Keep it up!

How is your friend liking the Ohlins so far around the city?

He really likes them. The consensus is that Ohlins handle bumps better than the stock suspension but things like potholes they don't. Lol

I'm installing Ohlins on Monday so I'm excited to try them out as well.

It's not fun. It has me seriously rethinking not getting the DCT, but it's fun all other times so...

And the way ordering/purchasing works here, if I wanted to get another bmw but with DCT it's like a 4-5 month wait.
