Am thinking seriously now of getting a Cayman GTS but am a little hesitant to pull the trigger based on the current pricing trend. They seem to be at a premium right now. All the 2016 Cayman GTS I am looking at are priced between 62-75k whereas the newer 2018 GTS are priced at 70-75k. I understand that’s likely because the 4 cylinder hasn’t been received well by the Porsche crowd but paying almost the same price for a 4 year old older model GTS seems like a high premium to pay. The situation was somewhat similar when BMW came out with the F8X turbo but pricing wise the E9X are priced far far below the F8X.
To summarize my question here, is paying 65-70k too much for a 2016 GTS? Am concerned I may be paying a high premium and pricing on the GTS might normalize next couple of years. Thanks. Picture for attention.

$88k gets you a gt4.
Go with that for lesser chance of buyer’s remorse and for some chance at value preservation. |

Not sure if a Bmw forum is the best place to seek Porsche pricing, but as you mentioned it does seem to be overpriced compared to the newer generation which is objectively better.

I have seen a lot of bmw folks moving to the cayman so that’s why I posted here. Problem with Rennlist or other Porsche forums is that their views are really biased. No one wants to admit their cars may be overpriced. The feedback is not nuertral.

I believe 981 values have been inflated for a number of reasons. A lot of people like the sound of the flat 6 vs turbo 4, which has caused:
1. Weak 718 demand in the US and there are still new 2018 718 GTS on dealer lots. 2. Dealers haven't been able to get rid of their in stock 718 cars even though there hasn't been any new 718 allocations for the US for the past 6+ months. 3. The latest rumor is that new 718 GTS isn't expected to come back to the US until late 2020 at the earliest and it could come back as a flat 6. What this tells me is that the 718 market has been weak and dealer inventory has outmatched demand. Now is a good time to get a 718 if you don't mind the sound. I believe once the 718 GT4 and 718 GTS flat 6 (rumor) comes out, 981 values will start to cool. |

Porsche's depreciate at a much slower rate than BMW. 2015 M3 worth half of what it sold for originally. Pick the Porsche you like and get it. I would suggest the 6 over a 4 cylinder all day long. Not to many "special" four banger's running around.

Yes, 70k it is a bit too much but Porsche market is hard to fully read.
If you can stretch a bit, or save a little longer, I echo the GT4 comment from another member above. I just saw in my local dealer a GT4 with 16k miles that sold for 86k. I loved it. If I didn't need a rear seat, I'd be all over a 981 GT4 or the new 718 GT4 (is have to wait 1-2 years for the new one to depreciate). |

As others said... no point in paying a high price for a non-GT Porsche. Might as well finance the extra 20k for the GT4...which is like an extra $350 a month spread over 5 years.

It didn’t feel special in any way like the 981. It felt a little faster but I would keep my F80 over that any day. On a separate note, if they would come out with a 6 cylinder on the 718 that would tank the 981 market so buying now would be a huge mistake. I was under the impression that Porsche announced they would keep the same engine through 2023 and then go electric.

I believe Porsche has indicated the 718 platform will continue until 2023 for a redesign, electric or otherwise. 718 GT4 has already been announced with a flat 6. There are also strong indications the same (maybe detuned?) engine will be used in a 718 touring package. It could be called GTS or add an additional trim above the GTS.

I own a 2017 base 718 (2.0t) and love it. I was considering getting a 981 GTS as a companion to itand drove one but just seemed dead in comparison to my 718. You have to ring the piss out of it to feel the power and unfortunately that’s when the 981 sings it’s melody. I definitely would not trade my 718 for a 981 GTS.

My buddy got a 981 GTS early in the year. Holy hell does that car sound amazing. I honestly had no idea. I've driven the new 4banger 718 at a Porsche event, no thank you. 981 GTS all day every day.
Values are what they are, because it is a fantastic car and not too many of them out there. |

Rennlist. Read all the posts on this topic and you will find some balanced views. There is currently a long and active thread on this topic on that site.
Consider this current discussion in context of how the 944 and 924 are viewed today. Throw in the 914 also. The Cayman and Boxster are probably the best non-911 sports cars Porsche has come up with. At the lower price point of these cars, Porsche is probably more willing to take potentially risky cost cutting actions, such as smaller engines, compared with the crown jewel of the brand, the 911. |

I had a '12 987 S that was a great car, I eventually traded it for a '13 C2S. I've had 718s as service loaners and I didn't like them, fast, but way too quiet and smooth for a sports car.

Wow, prices are really up since I was GTS shopping last year. At the time, manual GTS in bright colors (red and yellow) were $65-70K. The price difference between a GTS and GT4 at the time was about $25K.
At current prices, I would go for a GT4 if you can swing it. |
