Buying a car out of state
Need some help from you all, I'm purchasing a 2020 bmw with less than 6,000 miles so this vehicle is technically considered new in California.
I was told that if I need to register this car I would have to get the mileage above 11,000 is this true? Planning to fly in and drive the car back ~15 hours. |

Thanks for the confirmation, that's what I figured I never heard of such a rule and looked over the DMV website and didn't find anything.
Since this car would be considered new, is there anything special that I would need to get it registered? |

You would just need to smog it. Any car that’s purchased from out of state regardless of mileage requires it.
As for the mileage requirement there is a law that says you can’t register a non-California emission compliant vehicle until it hits both 7500 miles and 2 years old. This doesn’t apply to the M2 (or any BMW I believe) since they are all 50 state complaint. |

Yeah, I've purchased multiple cars from out of state, both new and used, the latest being a Focus RS in an attempt to avoid the dealer mark up. No issues with mileage upon registering the car in cali, just like someone said, have to do a smog.

smog + VIN registration is what you need to do. If the car you're buying out of state comes with temp dealer plates for that state, those won't work in CA and you'll have to wait until the CA plates come from the DMV in order to drive the car legally. If the car you're buying has permanent plates from another state, you should be fine.

I bought my CS in TX, get a reputable transportation company with an enclosed trailer for protection. First you have to get the car registered/VIN verified, pay the taxes and smog check. Keep in mid that some insurance companies will not provide coverage until vehicle is registered in CA but you can show your insurance card for coverage
I have AAA and that's what I was told. If vehicle is less than 2 years, its considered new. Make sure car complies with CA emissions which most new cars do but some pick ups do not, if its only EPA you're hosed, the sticker is under the hood, inspector will look at that when he's verifying VIN #'s. Also, some transport companies disconnect battery terminal during transport, please ask the question because if they do, you're OBD readiness codes might not be "ok" to pass smog check. All you need to know below. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicl...from-a-dealer/ I went to a DMV affiliate and paid a small fee, was out of there in 25 minutes. See link below, that's just one I found online. https://www.needtags.com/vehicle-reg.../san-francisco

I purchased my 2020 M2C from Illinois with 4300 miles.
As others have said, you need to do a Vin Verification for Out of State, and Smog if it has <7,000 miles. The temporary plate I had was not an issue, but I did go to the DMV in person, since the online form did not accept the temporary plate info. Also, I paid partial/incorrect taxes and purchased through a dealership, which was a big part of the reason I had to go to DMV. Some Vin Verification places can do the taxes, but it's either all or none. So for partial tax situations you must go to DMV. |

I bought it at Santa Rosa and yah no dealer around here is willing to let this go below 5k MSRP. I got this close to MSRP (paid a few thousand over) but it was the best deal around the Bay Area. they gave me so much shit because they wanted 10k and I negotiated hard to drop it.

Congrats on picking up your CS, welcome to the club! We should try getting the Bay Area CS’s all together for a photo shoot sometime!

Bought my M2C from Kuni in Beaverton and drove it down. They took care of the paperwork but I had to get the smog cert and VIN inspected once I arrived in CA and mail it back to the dealer. I think they used a titling company called Greenlight Titles.
Really painless process and I had CA plates show up in the mail like 1.5wks after delivery. |

Congrats. But paying anything over MSRP gives those a-holes incentive on doing this over and over again not sure why anyone would pay over MSRP. Not smart.
Plenty of deals at MSRP for the CS. Not very hard to find one.
