I'd guess it's mostly cost and refinement. There are some pretty highly tuned Porsche 911 Turbo/S out there with PDK, after all. I don't think the fact that it can be made to handle power levels requiring a built engine is all that relevant to most people. No denying it is a robust transmission, though.

If you're asking why BMW is switching from a DCT to a ZF8, the answer is cost. The more cars that utilize the same parts the cheaper it is for BMW. They are betting that driving enthusiasts will move to other luxury-sports brands and BMW can sell to a broader consumer base. With less bespoke parts (M-DCT), the more profit margin.
