Yep... actually follows in the footsteps of the original E30 M3. I wouldn't be opposed to a 4 cylinder M2 with 350-400 hp.

If you want to drop weight... dropping the inline 6 might be the only feasible option for significant weight loss. Other than that, I can't really see the car losing more than 150 lbs without a severe loss in daily drive ability.

This will be an M-crafted engine...

When I say "I don't know", I mean that literally, not rhetorically. I have no idea. Does anyone know if the cylinder liner thickness in the N20 would permit a significant overbore without changes to the block?

EDIT: I would like to point out that a 0.050 overbore would be considered on the high side for most engines. That is 1.27mm. I would be very surprised if the N20 could be bored 4mm.
Its hard to tell without all dimensions of the S55 engine, exactly how much there is to play with, but you might be right since its already a performance engine and should therefor be stressed to acceptable limits already.

So if that's true then the cla45 shares a lot in common with pretty much any current model bmw since even the current m offerings are absolutely soulless to drive. There is nothing special about the m5/6 in the way they drive let alone the other m models. The cls63 has far more character and so do the offerings of the panamera. The current m5/6 are the complete antithesis of what bmw once stood for, being fun sporty sedans. While there's more competition now, I don't think they've done a good job since every comparo seems to have them at the bottom and IMO after driving them they just don't have it anymore.
The m2 sounds like a cool idea but BMWS lower model offering feel cheap and are pretty horribly designed IMO. The proportions are just off from front to back.

This is the key. If we are all fighting over 800 units then this is really just a white whale for most. My dealer received three 1M's all of which had a additional $18,000 dealer up charge tacked on. He sold all three without issue. If they are that rare again Sugg Retail will mean very little.

So disappointed, I mean this was hinted at many times with talk of the M2 sharing key components with the upcoming X1M, but now we have actual straight up confirmation of the 4 cylinder.

Such a Shame that BMW is choosing to completely ignore the wishes of its customer (87% of us want an I6 according to our poll with over 500 votes)

I hate the way the back of this car looks nor am I a fan of FI, but if they make an M2 with a 4 cylinder/turbo, 325-350hp and light weight I'll be more than willing to give up my M3.

My guess is that they can create a "high strung" I4 that has to have the nuts revved off it (since so many people complain about that leaving the M3/4) and have a much more raw purpose than the M offerings further up the food chain.

It also creates distinction between the Ms--2 gets an I4, 3/4 gets an I6, 5/6 get V8s. Sort of goes along with this even = coupe and odd = sedan stuff--just lines up nicely.

If it makes a good noise, is light and a little crazy, I don't care what engine they put in it. I just want it to be different than the other M offerings. I think it has a chance to be so. We shall see...

Since the 1M was introduced so late in the life cycle, I don't think we will have the same problem with the M2. If it does indeed come to fruition on the timeline we have been hearing, then it would be ~2 1/2-3 years after the introduction of the 2 series itself. That leaves plenty of time in the life cycle for people to get one before the next generation of the 2er is out.

I completely agree that the CLA45 has no soul, I got to drive one for a day and was not impressed by its powertrain. It's very impressive that they managed to squeeze so much power out of 2.0 liters but there is too much turbo lag, the top end feels flat, the motor only revs to about 6,200 so the gears are short, the shift paddles are still laggy in typical Mercedes fashion, etc. The ride quality was very good but the steering and handling weren't very exciting at all. I really hope we see an M2 and I really hope it looks just like those red renders on the front page.

AMG did it.

Nothing wrong with a I4. No one says the S14 is a bad engine even though it's a 4.

No
My guess is this model will be produced in large quantities
The 1m was made in small numbers to generate hype for this model
But if you can afford to put down a deposit, why wouldn't you?
At least that way, you're at the top the list
Whether the production is limited or not, it's better to be at the top of the list.

I put down a deposit on my next car more than 1 year before its offered for sale
Before it was even announced it would be offered for sale in The S
I actually have my name down on 2 lists at 2 different dealers

Folks chill out and let's be optimistic BMW M team will have hands unleashed to develop raw car that currently does not exist in the lineup instead of fighting bean counters. This is their last chance or enthusiasts will migrate.

Of course it "makes sense". Look how well received the 1M was in the press. It was one of the best cars I've ever owned and I too will own a M2, 4 banger or not. I'm sure lots of CF components will make it over to the M2 as well which will most likely make it one of the lightest M's to come out in awhile.

And I here thought waiting 6 months for the M3 was going to be hard....

i8's 1.5l 3 cyl. engine makes 154hp/l. And it's not an M engine.

That's marketing talk for "oh shit, this model (cla 45) is selling way better than we expected, we have to compete"

"Soulless"
This is coming from the company that's making suv Ms
Electric steering
And a fully turbocharged lineup
And soon enough 4wd M models

Lets be honest, it's not about soul
It's about $$$$
