It's an s55 look at the charge pipes. Just not an m2c.

so can you tune via obd2 port?

My local tuner wants $400 to bench tune the car. It is my understanding they flash DME to an earlier one, and then I can use obd2 to change maps, is that right?

The above pic is for a bench unlock on an S55 before going with bm3. Bench unlocking does not revert the software version. It simply patches (unlocks) the current DME software that's on it.

This is good news since it means that the dealer is not likely to flash a newer software version to the ECU during a routine service.

It would be SUPER AWESOME if PTF could start a brand new thread just for later software M2C guys with clear and concise explanation of what needs to be done (bench unlock)and explanation of what is available after that (Can use regular OBD II port then for BM3? Don't need to worry about dealer updating ECU back to latest software etc)

The only thing I'm confused about, is that people often say that they re-flash their OEM tune, and then re-lock their ECU before taking into a dealership.

What exactly are people meaning when they say 're-lock' ? Would you have to have a bench unlock done again? I would only assume not, and that re-locking is just poor phrasing?

This would only apply to those that don't have an ECU with the latest software. With the prior version, you could re-lock the ECU before taking it in for service.

Realistically, how often is the ECU refreshed at the dealer? Is this a "once in a production run" sort of thing, or a "you need an oil change and an ECU flash" sort of thing?

i.e. Is this something that you have to repeatedly deal with?

Thanks. This puzzles me.

I agree it is somewhat confusing.
1: If you’ve bench unlocked your dme you cannot “lock” the dme before taking it back to service. 2: Once you’ve bench unlocked your dme you can flash tunes via the OBD port as many times as you want.
3: The dealer is NEVER going to update your software profile unless you A: request it and pay for it or B: you have an issue that is fixed by replacing a control module and requires programming. Hope this helps.

Or C there is a safety issue that needs to be addressed.

However (and I was corrected on this some time ago as I thought the same as you) some countries do upgrade the istep version as part of their routine service.

That's hot, they found a way to unlock the ECU, without having to physically remove it. Which was crux of circumventing the new boot-loader.

From what I gather, once you bench unlock the ECU, you are then free to flash any tune, through the OBD2 port.

However, I guess if the dealer then again updates the software, for whatever reason, it re-locks.

Good stuff

Any chance you can sell a DIY kit with instructions (video will be awesome) and ship it over? That will re-open this sales channel.

There needs to be a detailed youtube video how to bench unlock. Yeah there is hardware involved that you need to have, but it would still be nice to see how it is done.

That's not gonna happen. It's a business and that is kind of a trade secret. If a company offered a tutorial for free and someone messed up their dme they'd blame the company.

Can someone explain is this something that can be sloved in future updates. Or its going to be bench unlocking for march 2019 software moving forward.

I dont think I will be doing bench unlocking to my DME, so I might aswell forget about the whole thing instead of waiting without a clue!

If BMW can make it much harder for S55, they can at anytime do the same for N58 and S58. If this happens, Bootmod3 sales will decrease dramatically.

While I am sure PTF is working hard on an OBD flash solution for > Mar S55 ... I think it is imperative that a DIY Bench tune Kit be made available as an option. Otherwise, each time a new LOCK comes from BMW (N58 could be next), it will take time for PTF to reverse engineer ... that time in between equals drastically reduced sales ...

Just sayin ...

Hopefully, PTF can confirm its all actually possible. I think you mean B58! Not N58.

does anyone know an authorized BM3 shop in south florida (preferably in Broward county) that can do a bench DME unlock and flash my car with BM3?

the couple of guys I know down here, very reputable shops, want to remove the DME and send it away for unlock overnight, and then do the tune.....i can't do that!! I need my car as it is my only car and i have to haul my kids around.

looking for a shop that can do the unlock it without having to remove a ton of sh!t and just flash it.
