Catted DPs

Is there any consensus on which catted DPs are best for a mixture of no CEL, OBD readiness, and price? Thinking about switching my VRSF out for catted.

You're thinking of the N55 engine.

Im not aware of any downpipe which guarantees no CEL for the S55 engine. I think Akpraovic has the best luck but I dont think they guarantee it

Sigh parking in an enclosed garage that's shared makes catless feel very inconsiderate lol.

Pretty sure these are considered great:

@mike@x-ph.com should know best. Bear in mind he can only recommend these things for off-road use only.

AR quality and wielding is second to none.
Their cats are on same level as the other trusted brands

Turner Motorsport catted DP... value compared to the rest are extremely good. What is the quality of the Catts used and how do you find out? Mike i know you have plenty and ive bought stuff from you over the past, but turner are a repeatable company and surely those catted DP are good.

quality of cats is usually dictated by material and brand. Turner's has refused to disclose their brand that they source their cats from so it's safe to assume they're not reliable for longevity or durability by any means.

The catalytic core itself is usually quite pricy if that's another indicator of the quality of Turner's offering since the complete product is priced so low.

Higher end brands usually satisfy a few things: catalyst efficiency (the ability to effectively catalyze the exhaust fumes), longevity (how many miles of use before catalyst drops to poor efficacy levels), and durability (to heat cycles, pressure, etc)

HJS is usually recognized as the world leader for cats.

I 100% agree with this post/ TMS will not divulge the cat manufacturer and their retail is not in line with the two options I know are great quality.

AR & Wagner.

I went with the Wagner's and will get a dyno done before and after a tune soon.

My setup is charcoal delete with BMW dry filters, AA Center pipe and the Wagners 200's.

Its quiet enough off throttle, but on throttle its quite the package :-)

The DP's added about 20-25% more to the exhaust level. The center pipe was another 20-25% as well.

I live just a few miles from TMS and know Will. As you probably know he sold his parts division to ECS a few years ago.

Cheers,
HAZMAT

As far as I know, they use generic brands.

When a manufacturer uses high-quality cats, they'll make sure everyone knows it.

There is nothing wrong with using generic brands, in most cases, it saves money while still offering the same airflow without a fuel smell. The main difference is the CEL light.

My Wagners throw a P0420. 200 CEL's will throw codes. I'll get it tuned out soon. Also the cheap cats don't last. Ask me how I know. I overheated an EVO X motor with a blown 200 CEL HFC. The inexpensive Cats only last a couple years if you track a decent amount.

Here's a decent article on cat quality and info:

Thank you for sharing

Looks like Wagner upgraded their cats to the 300 CEL on the N55. It should take care of the CEL, but they do not offer any guarantee

Yes on the N55 the cat is a 300 CEL and most of the time it hasn't thrown a O2 code. At least what I've read on the boards...

You hear stories of catts breaking up!! Is that just BS and the generic that Turner uses would be ok.

Do the Wagners pass emissions tests? And any smell after cold start cycle has completed?

Its not BS I had a 200 CEL HFC on my 450 WHP EVO and during the last lap of a TT I blew the motor. Why? Cat melted and my EGT's sky rocketed!

If you want to buy cheap cats, please do so. I never will again.

We all vote with our wallets differently.

I haven't gone thru a emissions test yet, but even my cheap cats would pass the sniffer here in MA on my earlier cars.

Also, there is NEVER any smell with these cats that I have noticed...

It's not BS but to be fair not all generic cats are equal.

Proven brands use a generic brand that is of high quality. When you are getting a no-name pipe, they most likely are using the cheapest cats they could find.
These cats are highly likely to fail
