Lightbulb Ohlins R&T Coilovers - Question for Current Owners

**Disclaimer: I am aware that there are already threads discussing Ohlins spring rates. I decided to make this thread to get more detailed information from current owners and to help future buyers.

I'm ordering a set of Ohlins R&T Coilovers and was curious to hear a few things from current owners:

-What spring rates did you choose?
-What do you typically use your M2/M2C for?
-How often do you track your car?
-Are you running an R compound tire at the track?
-What are your alignment settings?
-Did you corner balance your car?

I've personally made the decision to go with 70N/mm front and 160N/mm rear which is softer than the 90/190 N/mm recommend by Ohlins. I spoke with a rep at Ohlins that helped with my decision, but I surprisingly hadn't seen anybody running this specific setup.

My car will see mostly street time to start, with around 4-5 track days a year, and I will be doing an alignment/corner balancing. I don't have plans to run an R compound tire initially since I also have a GT350, which will likely see more track time than the M2C. That could change depending on how much I like tracking the M2C in comparison.

-Jeff

I'm going with 70/190nm, per discussions with Brian @ Ohlins US. I was also looking for a good street setup with occasional track visits. See below for email correspondence from Ohlins:

"Your tech needs to measure in Ride Frequency to decipher ride quality, not simply the spring rates as this can become very misleading as all cars have different suspension designs and geometries.

Öhlins has found the 190 N/mm rear to produce a good ride frequency for performance and comfort. The front can be lowered from the 90 N/mm if the car is more street oriented to 70 N/mm or 80 N/mm to produce a "Flat Ride" frequency ratio better suited for street use.

If the car isn't going to be used on the track much, I would recommend the 70 N/mm front and 190 N/mm rear."

I'm finally taking delivery of my car Thursday and plan to install my Ohlins next week. Will report back my findings.

Hi Jeff,

You will love the Ohlins. I've had mine on for over a year now, 16k miles, and as of this weekend, 4 separate trips to the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, at the Tail or the Dragon.

My car is set up for spirited mountain driving and it handles amazing, gives me great feedback especially with fresh rubber, and turns in sharp as a knife.

The offset is the street ride is quite harsh, but even my wife and kids don't complain. Also the fact that I have left my dampening settings quite firm (10 clicks) contributes to this, and I've been too lazy to set them softer for daily driving in Florida.

-What spring rates did you choose?
Ohlins factory 90NM/190NM

-What do you typically use your M2/M2C for?
OG M2, based on mileage,
37.5% daily duties (kids school, family outings, errands),
52.5% local rallies, road trips (backroads and interstate)
10.0% spirited driving on mountain roads
* I do not commute, so that helps the above percentages

-How often do you track your car?
Will do some track days, but so far haven't yet with this setup.

-Are you running an R compound tire at the track?
N/A -
However most likely will run MP4S until it limits me

-What are your alignment settings?
Front camber -2.2 degrees
Rear camber -2.0 degrees
Front toe 0 in
Rear toe 1/32 in
Caster is not adjustable on this car

-Did you corner balance your car?
No, since I am neither racing it, nor heavily/seriously tracking it, I found this would be unnecessary for my application.

Hope this helps, happy to answer any other q's. I love talking about my Ohlins!

The best spring rates will be what feels the best to you. We have customers perfectly happy with 90/190, some even find it soft, and some find it stiff.

Quick question on the Ohlin RTs - is ride height adjustment fairly straightforward? Meaning the front you turn the shock collar with the supplied wrench?

I've read the rear height adjustment happens at the preload/spring, and not the shock body, so much more work.

OEM Ohlins spring rates - not sure why people complain these are too stiff, at 20 clicks mine rides much softer than stock, I daily mine at 15 clicks. I wouldn't want this car any softer as it's not a 5 series IMO.

I also have OEM rates on my focus RS Ohlins and they are right on the money as well.

I picked up my M2C yesterday and couldn’t believe how nice the factory suspension felt. I don’t know how anybody could say the factory setup is too stiff.

I have had the R&T set up for about a year. My 2017 M2 is not a DD car. I built the car as my own CS model (Street and track).

I have the 90/190 - figured that has the most development as Ohlins was designing the suspension. I find it fine for street driving. The car porpoise-es a bit over high frequency undulations, but that's somewhat expected w/performance suspension.

I run camber plates with -2.0 camber up front. Factory camber at rear (I believe -1.0). Toe is zeroed so I am not dragging tires. Steering feels great with the alignment and the camber plates improved steering feel (but with more NVH...but I don't mind)

Suspension works great with R compound, but so does the stock suspension.

I run 5 clicks for the track (Lime Rock Park) and 10 clicks for NHMS (bumpy track) and 15 clicks for the street.

The improvement in grip, composure, and stability over stock is dramatic - from my perspective. I ran two track days on stock suspension. Good suspension but def designed around cost/simplicity

One other point

The factory suspension isn't a big fan of curbing, as it can tend to upset the car somewhat. The Ohlins let you grab some curbing at the track and maintain grip at the same time. It's definitely worth a few tenths here and there, which add up!

-What spring rates did you choose? I am running 80 160
-What do you typically use your M2/M2C for? Weekends and track days
-How often do you track your car? 2-3 times per year
-Are you running an R compound tire at the track? Nope, but that sounds good.
-What are your alignment settings? No camber plates, so just slightly tweaked from stock.
-Did you corner balance your car? Yes.

I run it 3 clicks on the track; 18 clicks around town....if going for a driving/canyon weekend I run 10 clicks.

I went with 70nm/190nm rates.

I'll probably track 1-2 times a year.

No on R compound tires, my car is primarily a street car. But sure would be cool!

And no corner balancing yet, but plan to later this summer.

I'm running 12 clicks all around and the ride has been sublime. Very refined with dampening as good as advertised. I haven't played much with the clicks, but def want to try firmer and softer. I went with lower front rates as to take the edge off a bit and even out the ride frequency. So far, it's paid off and I'm loving the ride even with about an 1" drop all around.

The stock suspension I feel was okay, but neither here nor there. It was soft and supple with softer rate springs, but the shocks were a bit too stiff causing a stiff ride on road imperfections. There was also a bit of slop in the ride quality and turning too.

Sorry for the noob question, but what do you mean when you talk about 'click'? Rebound, compression, or whatever?

Yes, sort of. With the Ohlin RTs, there is only one adjustment knob for both rebound and compression, which is more simple and straightforward.

I realise that I'm maybe resurrecting an old thread, but if choosing different spring rates, do you have to order additional springs, or can you specify a different rate at the point of ordering?

I ordered from Alpha Motorsports and they sent the kit with springs at the rate I asked.
