Most ridiculous and recent ones being the M2 N55 having a closed deck, and 1M has a "high performance V8" says its user manual.

Now that they show the CS with the same weight as competition despite of new hood/roof/console/wheel, which combined is a 50lbs hard saving, period. All make me believe the adaptive suspension really adds all the weight back.
I am a bit confused by the spec sheet weights as well(being identical to M2 Comp). Sport Auto showed a 94lbs difference to the Comp(CS spec w/ CCB). CCB rotors save about 52lbs, so most M2CS without the $8k CCB will come in around 40ish lbs less than a Comp. 763m is probably half that 40lbs. The remaining savings(20ish lbs) from the carbon parts.

Dealer told me they got their first communication in the USA this afternoon and that BMWUSA says first cars won't be delivered until September 2020 and that pricing will be revealed "soon".

They're hoping the deliveries will be sooner, but that's a bummer since original dates were hinted at earlier on the year.

Going to be a long wait...

That time line actually works great for me.

But then you deal with snows almost immediately afterwards.

That doesn't sound right, BMW won't release a MY2020 in September of 2020, so it either will be a MY2021, or delivery will be around April of 2020, your dealer doesn't know what they're talking about. Allocation always come late January and SOP will be around March, and delivery will be around April 2020 for MY2020.

Can someone explain to me why you would pick this over an M3/4 comp? I get that it's nimbler but is that it?

M2 CS SOP & EOP:
  • Europe: 03/2020 - 09/2020
  • worldwide: 03/2020 - 12/2020
First deliveries in Europe are expected to start in Spring 2020.

A late yet strong contender for the ridiculous post of the year.

Probably different vendors for each. Maybe BMW / SGL actually make the roof.

Compared to a ZCP M4 on paper? Yes.

The reality is they drive differently. I've driven a regular M2 on track and ZCP M3 and M4, and if track is all you are concerned about, get the M3 or M4.

There is a different feel to cars because of the wheelbase and firmware tuning. I think the M2 and M2C are more fun on the street where you have limits.

Possibly, but if they can make every CF component of the CSL match, they can do it with their other vehicles as well.

If you watch the BMW video of how they make the CFRP roof, you can see the large plain weave being used. It's just not usually the top layer. Look at the scraps in the trashcan in the video.

What is your point exactly? I wasn't debating that. I'm well aware that the roof is constructed from plain weave. Did you even read the totality of the discussion?

That yes, I agree with your point that they could have made everything match. They have all the materials on hand.

I thought I read that the racing version would not be available until later in the year. Are there different tiers of dealership that would limit a dealership to later allocations? Maybe this dealership received specific info that they would not get initial allocation.

I have an F80 and my wife had a 228i for a while.

The size difference you perceive when driving the cars is significant. The 2 series is very similar to my E46 in how the car feels around you and how big it feels on the road. The F80 feels much bigger.

That's not a dig on my F80 at all, as I love it and The size is not a downside for me, but taking the same car and making it the size of a 2 series will be that much "better" and more agile.

Also, by the time the CS is out, the M4 will be dead, and the CS will go away just as the G80 is coming out. So it's more like the CS is a perfect way to fill the time gap between the M3/4 generations with a car that has similar performance.

If by "milking the hype machine" you mean following the same product planning and marketing model that everyone in the industry has used for a decade+, then I agree.

The auto industry is very predictable these days. This cars specs have been predicted accurately since the M4CS was first announced two years ago.

BMW is following a business case and being efficient with their production to meet customer needs and expectations within reason. There's no nefarious "hype machine" intent on screwing customers out of money.

Where are you located Flash? I thought start of production was March 2020 so you would assume delivery in spring.
