Great review. I'm increasingly wondering at the odd matchups the CS is finding itself in. For those who want rear seats in a small sports saloon what are the natural alternatives? The M2C and then daylight?

With the admittedly big caveat that I've never driven it, the GTS's gearing seems less like a small quibble and more like a dealbreaker for a road car. Who wants to redline it in 1st gear? Or have to downshift into 1st to power out of a corner?

The M2C is really the only CS competitor. You have to put the CS against actual sports cars, which it should fail in the comparisons. That's why the C gets so much love because it's a truly fantastic bargain. CS punches above it's weight, and the C punches waaayyy above it's weight.

I shopped hard for alternatives. I really didn't want to buy another BMW. I've been driving/racing BMW's now for a straight 11 years and wanted a change... couldn't find anything else that could give me what I was looking for with the dose of practicality I still need with wanting to share with my kids etc.

This summary at the end of the review nails pretty well the allure for me:

Bold, brash and brilliant fun. The wildest yet most usable car here.

It was for me in the 981 GT4... and they mention in reviews that the engine doesn't really sing until 4K or better, and that's really true. So you are really up there in 2nd gear speed wise before you have any good sounds. It just doesn't "work" at all on the street unless you are really running hard in the 60-90 range on back roads, and I flat out will not ever do that nor ever condone it. Have literally lost acquaintances and family to those types of things.

Once you've been on track, pushing it on b roads just doesn't seem safe or worth it.

The RS3 comes to mind but it drives nothing like the M2C

It's quite obvious that the guy will be enjoying a Miata more than a 718

Yeah, doesn't take a lot of track time to understand that. 17+ years of it later you know darn well what the story is.

This directed at me? and the miata supposed to be some sort of automotive insult?

All I am saying is if you mainly drive at the backroad with less than 60miles/hr, miata will bring you way more fun than a modern p car or m2cs in this regard. I don't get the argument that you complaining a sports car drives mediocre in mid-low speed. The cars are designed to track and autobahn after all.

That's a reasonable overall point. I'd agree a miata or older bimmer or the like will have a bit more fun factor for driving back roads at legal speeds. Most people are daily driving or weekend driving these cars, and it's a legitimate point, however, that the gearing and exhaust come on points matter in the experience. I found the M2 far more engaging around town on test drive than the GT4. Track experience is another issue, and has been argued about extensively and depends on what you're total use make up is. I've tracked and competed for years, and I do plenty of back road twisty drives as well. Selecting the right tool for each job, or a jack of all that meets your individual needs matters depending on your viewpoint.

Same. It's in a class if it's own. The others are more weekend cars.

Weirdly enough, I have a bumpy hairpin crazy road near me that almost feels like a tarmac rally. My 20 year old WRX is more fun than my M2C on this road. I'd pretty much guarantee it's more fun than the other 3 cars too. It's probably not faster, just more fun. Heel and toeing, just eating the bumps (I have Kone adjustables, more camber, loads of braces, nice fat rear sway bar). On any other surface the M2C kills it in every conceivable way though. And that's the thing. I spend most of my time on "any other surface". That's why I love the M2C it does everything so well and it is the car I can drive all the time and get a massive smile.

The CS is the next level but apparently even better as a daily. Can't wait.

The 4 seats really is a trump card for many owners where it needs to be a sporty and practical car.

I'd like to see any of these other cars fit a 30x60" desk top and office chair from Ikea like I did last week.
