The M2 was conceived as a balanced road car that can do light track work. A car that is fast but not too fast to fully enjoy on the road, especially canyon roads. This is its ideal environment. It can be modded to be more track focused and does so very well, but the original balance is somewhat lost. The M2 Comp becomes more about numbers than a balanced road car that will be very satisfying to those who know what they’re getting. But if it’s numbers you’re after than the N55 is not the car for you and if you think the M2C will keep your interest, it won’t when the next best thing comes around.

To each their own. Ill be in the canyons. Hope to see you there.

I already have a '15 M4 that I truly enjoy! My '17 M2 is my DD and a lot of fun to drive, but I would not buy an M2 that is pretty much a "baby M4" with the same engine and seats inside. The current M2 with the N55 is very balanced and sorted out. Knowing BMW, the new one will be a lot of fun too, but probably not enough to jump from my current car.

I waited 30+ years to purchase an M car - took 8 months of waiting after I ordered. Tracked every step of build/transit. PCD delivery. This was my dream car and it still is. It will take a lot more than a Comp pack to get me to sell this car!

Well stated! Same here! Although my wait was half as long.

This is a fine question IMHO. I own a wonderful M140i (5 door) and have just put on the MP LSD and waiting for the MPE this friday Maybe. I'm on the list for one of the very first six M2 Competiton here in italy, but I'm not sure to go on with the purchase. Why? I will never justify a price around 80k euros (that's how it's told in germany) for a wonderful engine of course, when you can have for more than 20k euros less, the N55 M2, 0.1 second slower from 0-100 and just few things differents. It depends on the cost, but my current car at the dyno signed an extremely realiable 367 HP stock. and measured a 0-100 km/h in 4.5 dead. What can I ask more from a RWD 6 pot Hback? The M2 competition has a big appeal for me, but if it will cost as somebody is saying, I'll not confirm the order for sure, maybe waiting for something more special next year, as the new M3 or the new 911.

Thanks for pointing that out, but I already knew that the S58 wouldn't appear until the next generation (I never said it would appear in this gen) - just not certain that there will be a model year 2021 M2 but, if there is, no doubt it'd still have the S55 which would make it three model years.

That possibility doesn't change my point at all, however - anyone dumping a current M2 just for the "new" lump will find themselves with another engine that'll be out of production in a little more than two years (about 29 months). Granted, there might be a gap before the next generation appears, so maybe they'll be content for three whole years - still not much time in my opinion.

NFW, especially since I just got mine a month ago! Besides, if pricing does as expected and most options are now a la carte, I'd probably be looking at an M3/M4. The current M2 was a relative bargain; the M2 Comp, although more capable, isn't looking to me like it'll have the same value proposition.

A few possibly incorrect assumptions there.

1. Why do you think the TMIC is not staying?
2. What makes you think the Comp is about numbers only without even driven one?

We need to be open minded so we don’t get stuck at a particular point in history without progression (6 speed manual aside ) If it is a financial reason, I totally understand. If it is because people think it’s less fun then I have great news for you. The fun factor of this car is way up there.

I've waited awhile to get this car, and the wait was mostly of my own doing. It's everything I thought it was, and then some. No way I'm trading it.

It's not wise to trade a brand new M car for the coming two years, enjoy your M2/3 for the next 4 years cycle and trade it for a brand new S58 engine.

I'll give one a test someday, but I doubt I'll swap unless it's a dramatic "upgrade". I'm not yet convinced it is an upgrade.

Now that I have seen the way the M2 Comp looks the Corvette Grand Sport in orange looks much better to me now.

I thoroughly enjoy my 17 M2 6MT. I already have added the bits to put my signature/touch on it. I already feel that I don't utilize the car to it's full potential so purchasing a 19 M2 Competition would only add to underutilizing the cars potential and spending more monthly... it doesn't compute in my case.

If I was looking to purchase an M2, I may consider the M2 Competition. But waiting for allocation, higher MSRP, the likely cost over MSRP (dealer markup), higher insurance premiums... I'd probably still chose a base M2 or look for a used Pre LCI.

Fortunately, it's an easy decision for me. In a couple years, I'll see what direction the M2 goes and face this decision then. For now... I'm very happy with my base M2.

Currently have a 2018 M2 as of October 2017. Going to wait for model year 2020 (July 2019 production) for a new M2. Can't see how buying a new car every year makes any sense. Every two years is fine and a happy medium.

You are going to be waiting a little longer for new M2.

EOP of F87 M2 is Oct 2020, F22 2-Series EOP is 2021. Usually there's a hiatus between end of production (EOP) of a BMW M model and the start of production (SOP) of its next-generation successor.
