It's been repeatedly lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2017 wearing a 'mask' hiding the reworked front end (though still with the M235i side mirrors) + distinctive S55 engine sound.

See several videos in the dedicated thread here ("BMW M2 and M2 CS test mule videos (compilation)").

See also for example this post of last September, where I assumed that also park distance control was hiding behind the 'mask' (USA-spec VIN sheets would subsequently confirm my assumption).

To my eyes, this whole chunky plastic camouflage construction is just a mask bolted on the front end to hide a splitter / front lip (and maybe also front PDC).

Otherwise said: by bolting-on that mask, the splitter is less obvious.

Right what I mean is I am surprised we have not seen 2 series mules out testing. That they are testing facelift changes on M model first is.. a first. isn't it?

- for the M3 and M4 we have a competition pack (zcp) which is really a nice tweek on the base model. Ie a bit of tune, handling/chassis refinement etc.
- then we have the M3/4 CS which goes up significantly in performance to 460 bhp and is a new model with limited production rather than a package.

So for the M2 the front grill changes, s55 engine etc all feels like a CS to me. It seems like a big step to be called the ZCP or comp package.

What do you guys/gals think?
It has never been a "competition pack" but rather the "M2 Competition" intended to replace the current N55 M2. The fact that this has to be explained time and time again proves BMW's naming structure in this case is confusing and absurd.

me too..
I’m just talking about how the vin info has now changed from calling the car Competition to Cs as per the post by Artemis today.

  • WBS2U7C57KVB08890 = 6MT (HS+orange) (Jan 23, 2018)
But there's a novelty: in VIN sheets of ALL test mules (October 2016 through today), the model name was now changed from "M2 Competition" to "M2 Cs".

The "M2 Competition" model name has vanished from all VIN sheets.

So, "M2 Competition", "M2 CS" or "M2 Cs" ?

I'm holding out for the rebirth of puke yellow, which will make all the other colors much more valuable :-)

thanks. I wouldn't be surprised for all the VIN sheets to come out with B5830T0 instead of S55 ( as a place holder ) at some point.. anything can change.

meh... it's just baby steps. I'd love to see BMW get a little crazy like they do with their concepts. This is nothing.

It's the financial executives telling the designers to play it safe. Boring.

I don't believe or disbelieve anything. I wait for the facts to come out. A lost art I guess.
Number of M2 test mules powered by an S55 engine since October 2016 with Mineral Grey body color: zero.

Fact.

And there is also this post of last Summer:

it doesn't mean that the " M mirrors " you are seeing are MORE AERODYNAMIC.. as in.. it's not an " excuse" when it's a TRUE statement.

Now then.. for STLYISTIC purposes.. if they have added some " M mirrors" apparently it will make some buyers feel better about themselves.. or their purchase.. ..... even while they are less aerodynamic.

that's because it's a 15 year habit for many M fans.

is the race track in California MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA or LAGUNA SECA?
Actually.. it's LAGUNA SECA since the naming rights purchase was temporary over the last 20 years and now it's back to the original name.
Of course... someone new to the game might think that someone calling it LAGUNA SECA is amusing..

Heck the X1 probably has a better Cd than the M2. EDIT - Oh wait.. it does !

http://autotk.com/dimensions/bmw/x1/2016/

2016 BMW X1 coefiicient of drag 0.29

2016 BMW M2 Coefifficent of drag 0.35

So.. I am confident that BMW is CORRECT.. that " M Mirrors" will likely INCREASE drag, making the M2 SLOWER.
However.. there's no accounting for TASTE.. So there you go! Forget performance.. it's all about STYLE.
