Ohlins vs M Coilovers.

Not sure which to go for. My M2 is still in the middle of the Atlantic and I can still have parts installed via the port but idk what to go for. Can anyone attest to the quality of the M Coilovers As well as the Ohlins?

I want something comfortable but at the same time I wanna be able to have fun in the hills here in Northern California.

If it helps I live in San Francisco and Sacramento. If you know the road conditions, youd know they're pretty shitty.

I have the Ohlins DFV and I love them. I switched my stock suspenion out at about 5000miles and the ohlins are a bit tamer on the rough roads here in San Francisco but the really bad roads it can be jarring. The jarring ride may be contributed to my chosen ride height and rebound settings.

I am glad I swapped out my stock suspension the car drives a lot tighter in curves with a lot less body roll. I noticed the reduced body roll driving up to mount tam if that helps.

I am in Berkeley and spent Sunday hitting the back roads of West Marin, this car is a blast!!!!....I am getting ready to pull the trigger on Ohlins Road and Track. After doing my homework (reading threads on Bimmerpost M2, M3 and M4 forums), talking with Harold at HP, emailing Ohlins and hearing from Jake there, and talking with a couple of folks who install and personally use Ohlins I am ordering them with approx 15% softer spring rates; plan is to run 80N/mm front and 160 N/mm (standard from Ohlins is 90 N/mm front and 190N/mm rear). I think this will take the edge off, making it a little more supple than stock (I hope). I figure I will start with 18 clicks for street/ back road use and 6 clicks for my 1-2 track days per year.

What was your criteria for going with this configuration besides a more supple ride? What ride hight? I just asking because this is next on my list and Ohlin's R & T just seem to be the best way to go. Not surprising! Thanks for any info.

Just reading, talking with lots of folks and collecting info...it is clear that it really depends on where you are planning on doing the bulk of your driving. Being a back roads kinda guy I know I want something that will keep the rear end settled which I am hammering out on Hiway 1 or running out to Marshal on the Petaluma/Hicks Valley Rd....and compliant enough that my wife will actually get in the car!!!
Some folks want it even firmer than offered by Ohlins, turns out the guys at Performance Technic (Fremont) actually went with stiffer springs rates on their 'shop car' but that is because it is really set up for track use... Yesterday I spoke with the folks over at Griffin Motorwerke (got a Fabspeed Sport Cat installed yesterday...holy shit that was an awesome bump in power and sound)in Berkeley; they have a ton of tuning experience and they also thought the spring rates on the Ohlins R&T are set more for track duty. So next I am heading up to Sears Point/Infineon Raceway to talk to some suspension guys up there who come highly recommended...I really enjoy doing the research on projects like this,...kinda the measure twice, cut once philosophy.

I?m in the same boat. Car doesn?t actually get delivered till another couple weeks but I don?t even know where to begin with messing with the different spring rates with Ohlins. I was thinking about just buying them as is with the standard offered rates but figured I need to do more research before purchasing

Harold at HP Autosport in Santa Barbara...he has some comments on this thread...knowledgable and great prices!!!..or of course through your installer...I am planning on going through my installer as he is close to same pricing and is clearly the man when it comes to setting up M2 suspensions in the Bay Area...Aleks at Alekshop; just sayin....

I highly recommend the Ohlins. No experience with the M Coilovers, but I have plenty of experience with offerings from Ohlin's on numerous platforms. In terms of a trackable street coilover, they are hard to beat.

Thanks for the feedback! I've also talked with Harold at HP Autosport the other day and ended up ordering a set. 458/80NM front
896/160'ish (swift springs) Rear. Basically one step lighter on the coils from the stock R & T's. Looks like they're shipping today so hope to get them installed in the coming weeks.

Have you installed your Ohlins yet?...I am contemplating the same set up and I'd love to hear your impressions.
Thanks.

I'm out in SF also. Did you end up going with the standard springs rates with the Ohlins?

I would not go with a softer spring, given you will also be going to the track too. I had Ohlins R&T on my 335is. Can tell you that I could make car much much softer or much much harder than the OEM M2 suspension just by adjusting the damper. 18 clicks will be a much softer ride on the street compared the OEM M2 suspension. I would say the OEM M2 suspension would be like having Ohlins set to approx. 10 or 12.

i'll let you know next week...Ohlins R&T with spring rates of 80N/mm front and 160 N/mm rear going on this Friday....
I plan on running it with 15 clicks at first which should be slightly softer than OEM but should hold better on canyon runs than OEM. The following week I plan on adjusting them to 5 clicks and make some canyon runs with things on the stiffer side...I'll keep you posted.
