Yes, since we were taking figures from Car and Driver magazine on the M2, I thought I would match it with 2011 September issue of Road And Track where they put the 1M up against the Cayman R and Lotus Evora S. The numbers I put up is straight from that source.

I am not an expert on sound nor have I driven the M2. Just adding some comparative numbers out there.

I hope you're right Orange. However I used to design control centers for NASA and the military. We had pretty stringent requirements on db levels in those environments. We used white and pink noise generators for test and when you get up around 70db you had to make sure you were heard by raising your voice and speaking distinctly. Doesn't make me any sort of expert but I don't think I'm being too carried away. I would like quite a bit less in my daily driver.

As for those that noted that the M3 is as loud, you are certainly correct according to some reports but not according to others. Maybe we'll see some differing measurements on the M2 as well.

They typical real world reference for 70db is a noisy restaurant. Just test drove a 340 a week ago. It was certainly quieter than 70db cruising at 70mph. Maybe the C&D numbers will be overly pessimistic for the M2 as well.

As for 3db being hardly noticeable, maybe that's true in the real world at high sound levels. Certainly not the case in a closed environment running noise generators. In that setting 3db was very noticeable. I think it would be in a car as well. Look at different models that run at 67db that we think of as luxo-cruisers compared to hot hatches running at 70db. At 72db you are now in the realm of old GT500's and Camaro ZL1's. Cool cars for what they are.. but not commuters.

What's the difference in the level of noise with the active sound coded out?

I'm about to add insulation ($450 worth) to my M2. I am losing my hearing so have trouble hearing my wife. Will take some readings at 70mph before (with ASD) and after with insulation and without ASD.
Give me a couple of weeks..

I would be very interested to read more about your project. It would be interesting if you can take a reading without asd and no extra insulation too.

I already have asd off, 51487221993 and 05 on the schema but there is still lots of road noise.
real oem shows that door insulation 51487319479, 51487319480 is already on the car.

I don't think 51487319479 is on the car. I think there are a bunch of threads already about people adding it back. The other 2 series cars have it though.

OK for starters the insulation that they removed for the rear of the car does not weigh much. As you can see in the pics here there is basically none.
The worst noise maker looks to be the lack of part # 41007294289 and 41007294290. The big hole you see above the rear seats has a cover (light weight) in the F22. Without the cover noise from the rear wheels travels right into the cabin unstopped. I will cover the hole with Dynamat as the part are only available from Germany. I also applies some rubber base foam to outside body. It is pretty thin right there.
Right of the bat - I don't buy the weight saving aspect....and the lack of the cover so the driver can hear the wheel spinning....guess some of you like that noise - not me. Give me exhaust and engine every time!
Measured the sound in the cabin before I did any of this
82db at 70mph
82db At 70mph with the ASD bypassed.
With the back open like this 92db at 70mph! ...and it sounds like the exhaust sound is in the car!
Stand by for more updates.

They removed all that 'weight,' I am sure it must of saved a whopping 2 pounds.... Weight Reduction to BMW = Cost Cutting. That's why they also removed the blue stitching on the knee pad, you know, weight reduction. A daily car doesn't need to be obnoxiously loud to be fun and enjoyable.

Now if this was a Murcielago, that would be another story...
