Michelin PS4S on stock suspension. I need to remove the 12mm spacers though. It's currently overhanging about 1/2 inch

OP, thanks for being one of the early adopters of 295s and posting pics. Otherwise, I would have gone with 275 or 285.

How is the ride? Road noise? Handling?

I like . What do ya'll think about 295/35 (non-lowered)? The 30 sidewall increases the gap between fender. 35 will decrease the gap, though it may rub?

How’s the rear grip with the 295/30 4S and all the extra power? Is the wider 4S grippy enough to put the power down?

Also, how much harsher is the ride with the 30 vs 35 4S?

The extra ~30mm certainly do help but the rubber itself is a huge step up. Going from Contis to Michelin's best all-around street tire is night and day. I can actually hook up in the wet now. The only time the TC light flashes (dry road conditions) is when cornering on uneven pavement (blame that on suspension and damping) and WOT from a standstill (plus a chirp from 1st to 2nd). Power gets down in all other situations.

I haven't noticed a change in ride quality. It's a lower profile tire but better rubber compound so it's a wash in the comfort department.

Sounds good. I’d be coming from a 285/35 4S, which doesn’t seem enough for Stage 4 power (which I’ll be going to soon).

I don’t want to compromise daily noise and comfort with an Extreme Summer tire, so the 30 series 4S may be the best choice.

It's enough tire for sure. I was actually thinking about going Sport Cup2 rears but wet traction is horrible.

Traction below 45F is also terrible with the Cup 2s...

Who can comment on PS4S 295mm vs RE71R 265mm, grip wise?

I'm on RE71R and am trying to decide on my next set of tire. But 295 30 19 will force me to either AD08R or PS4S.

Stock PSS 265mm is completely junk BTW, compared to RE71R.

I used to think anything from max performance category is junk, including 295 PS4S. But had a second thought because recently BM3 flashed my friend's M2 and had fun with his car on 285mm P Zero. Surprised his grip was way better than when I was one year ago with 265PSS. I think tire width really makes a difference.

Too many variables here.

A 265 4S will smoke a 265 71R in the rain and cold. Assuming you mean dry, warm weather (and having driven many miles on both tires), I doubt a 265 71R could match a 295 4S. I ran similar times on track with a 265 71R and a 285 4S.

If I’m going easy fitment, warm weather, and don’t care about comfort, I’d run 255/285/35 F/R 71R. Colder temps & rain, same sizes in 4S.

Extreme fitment, 265/35 305/30 71R or 265/30 295/30 4S. The 71R is loud and uncomfortable for a street tire.

@ZM2 thanks for your first hand experience.

71R has been the king of extreme and even beats most of streetable competition including cup2. I know how day and night difference it makes over PSS.

How much better is 4S than PSS? Not much according to tests.

The way you made 4S sound like, it's touching 71R performance. Which with all due respective, I seriously doubt.

In your post you mention 265 71R vs 295 4S. These will be close in grip depending on what you’re doing with the car, but the wider 4S is likely the winner.

I’ve run 265/35 71R and 285/35 4S on track and times are very similar. I was able to get the power down earlier with the wider 4S, but the 71R had higher lateral grip in the corners (1.1g vs 1.03g). A 295/30 4S is quite a bit wider than even the 285/35, so I’d suspect it to be the winner on track vs a 265/35 71R.

If you have the same amount of 71R and 4S rubber under the car, the 71R will smoke the 4S, unless it’s raining or cold. That’s why I’m going to try 265/35F and 305/30R 71R on a 9.5 ET33 and 10.5 ET45 track wheelset.

One of my track buddies (and forum member) runs 255/35 & 285/35 71R on his OEM wheels all the time. It’s a very quick setup and is likely quicker than a 295/30 4S setup, but again, loud on the street and can be sketchy in the cold & wet.

Your friend who runs the 255/35 & 285/35 71R, is his M2 all stock suspension?

Stock suspension, camber plates up front at -3.0, rears at -2.0.

I’ve run similar sizes with similar camber and 15mm lower.

I'm trying to get maximum tire on OEM suspension with no camber plates. Do you know if that set-up would work without camber plates?

I think it would, but there’s a 265/285 thread floating around somewhere that may have more info.

The 71R is wider than typical in its size, which is why I mention the 265 thread. You won’t have any issues in the rear with 285.

Editing my initial reply. I did a quick WOT in 3rd at 3000 rpm and TC light did a quick flash (felt slight slippage) then hooked up until throttle liftoff at 4000. This was on a sunny 80 degree day. The point is, when running higher boost, some slippage is going to occur no matter how much rubber we have. It is a front engine car after all.

On 3rd gear, for STG4 power it would only happen (though barely happen with good road and temp) on downshift where torque ramp up. Mechanic of material dictates that it requires much greater force, or traction in our case, within certain distance in the moving direction to handle the increasing acceleration than a constant one.

Starting from low rpm, STG4 power would be far too weak to lose traction even on stock tire on 3rd. I know that because I log full 3rd and 4th gear all the time. Try that to let m2 disappoint - turbo lag, no torque, feel numb all the way to redline etc. Use M4 instead, even stock, to understand the difference.

BTW, that not losing traction, is a big part of why linear power delivery is preferred as OEM approach.

If 295 PS4s is anywhere near 265 RE71R. When warmed up, you'd feel there is too much traction for 400hp/420wtq even on 2nd.
