As many have commented above, the LIE is notorious for racing. Granted doing 100+mph splitting lanes was extremely excessive, it’s really nothing new. Driving on the LIE/BQE/SIE on days when there isn’t any bumper to bumper traffic, it’s normal to do some spirited driving. 70% of drivers are moving well above the speed limit 30% of which are usually weaving in and out of traffic. I have hours of dashcam footage to prove it.
I also find it very funny that there are so many hypocrites on here, all of you were young at one point, and all of you did some form of speeding and or weaving in and out of lanes. Please stop the hypocritical BS, you guys didn't buy a turbo'd BMW to drive slowly in the right line. You could have saved 30k+ and gotten a prius. Is it wrong? Absolutely! But we have all done it in the past (hopefully not nearly as crazy as the guy in the video).
This guy was just used as a news story and the BMW name was tarnished for nothing. Go back a few short years all the fresh drivers, kids with their junior licenses, were getting into new cars and doing the same thing in their Infiniti G37's, a few years before that it was the Nissan Maxima's. BMW has nothing to do with it, the cars are getting faster and the brands are changing. In a few years it could be Buicks that everybody is driving and moding. Who knows?
In my opinion the problem here is the NY ego. “I’m a better, faster, more experienced driver than everybody else and if I see somebody passing me, that’s my invitation to go into the full out race mode.” This logic is retarded but seems to be awarded to almost every new driver in NY, some grow out of it, some (like the guy in the video) do not.

/End Rant

Edit:
For the record before everybody gets their panties in a bunch, I do not condone this kind of driving. I just found it funny how many people were quick to jump on the bandwagon and express their hatred for the guy in the video when they have done something similar in the past themselves.

It makes you either an asshole or a moron, or any combination of the two. This kind of shit isn't pushing your car at all, you could do this kind of driving in a 600hp Merc or an 80hp Corolla, the only common denominator is the idiot behind the wheel. If you think this is ok someone needs to get you out of a car and onto a bicycle.

An hour and a half from NYC, http://www.monticellomotorclub.com/ should check it out sometime. Much more fun than driving like a dumbass on the street. Could also do auto-x.

The only shocking thing about this is that it took place in USA where most drivers have no idea what's around them because they never change lanes to make room for others.

I think you missed the reason that people are mad. People are not mad because he drives spiritedly. People are mad because the driver did that in traffic and put other people at risk. There is time and place for everything. Heavy traffic is not the time or place to drive spiritedly.

How old are you? 12? This is real life not a video game
While i definitly agree speeding is dangerous, it is not a major concern and this type of propaganda is used as reason for the POs to target speeders and puni$h them. the end of this story is no one at all was hurt. I don't condone speeding in most scenarios but.. statistics show, speed accounts for less than 5% of accidents and included in the 5% are mistakes made by mindless drivers that the speeder would not be able to react to bc the POs deemed the reaction window was shorter due to speed. Drivers who are distracted are the main cause of accidents. The easily entertained and easily distracted lower IQ candy crushing tweeter feed refreshers we share the road with account for most of the accidents. Put it this way what is more common a street racer or a texting driver? For some reason we don't see a news special about these cretons.

I definitely think these guys were driving like a holes but speeding is not as bad as this story makes it out to be.

Sorry I offended anyone but I thought this was a open BMW forum where I could express my ideas freely without being judged.. My bad..

I really don't support assh0le drivers and trust me NYC is infested with tailgaters, no-signal, texters, and just generally miserable people who project their emotion unto the driving public.. I stay clear of them and always give them the right of way because they more than often they are driving some POS and have a lot less to lose.. I think these people put more at risk with their careless behavior than someone who appreciates the potential and limitations of their car and step on it when they're feeling a little peppy.. The guy in the video clearly was in the wrong but I think they were a little too harsh on the punishment. He obviously knew how to the handle the car and no one was hurt but they seized his vehicle based of a hazy video.. Scary..

I lost friends in auto accidents and I witness a lifeless body being ejected from a car because the guy wasn't wearing his seatbelt.. I would never underestimate the importance of safe driving but at the same time I understand how tempting a fast BMW can sometimes be, so I keep an open mind..

You are correct, free forum and that's why I was "judging" what you wrote earlier. For what it's worth, I also agree 100% with what you wrote in your most recent post.

We all get it, everyone speeds, and of course you'll push the performance car every now and then, agree with you, that's one of the reasons you buy performance car. I think what most people are upset in this case is how and where it was done. Dangerous, irresponsible, endangers innocent lives and just plain stupid. As someone mentioned earlier, you don't need a performance car to do what he's done in this video, you just need to be totally careless, any car will reach these speeds today. Based on the article posted, not the first time for this driver either, so, yeah, in my opinion they should come down pretty hard on him.

Picture you are out cruising on a beautiful Saturday morning with your wife and two little kids in the back seat in your freshly waxed BMW obeying all traffic laws going to meet up with some friends for brunch. Then all of a sudden some 21yo kid "driving spiritedly" comes and cuts you off and causes you to spin out and roll your car multiple times. I'll leave it up to your imagination how the rest of the story ends. Not exactly the way you'd picture that day would go eh? All because of some stupid kid trying to show off what his moms BMW could do?

I'm all for enjoying your car from time to time and I do so as well but like others have said there is a time and place for it. In heavy traffic and splitting lanes in between cars is probably the most idiotic and moronic thing I've seen on the internet simply just to show off.

This kid is clearly and idiot, but honestly, in terms of public endangerment, there's not a whole lot of difference in this and texting while driving? I feel like this targets a certain demographic while 95% of us are guilty of the other. I've even seen cops doing it here in Atlanta which is really disconcerting.

Can someone enlighten me how they can seize his car?

Maybe areas need more tracks. When a track is built they give it a noise ordinance. Uh not one for airports or planes. Just crazy. Next time get a license plate blocker or learn to edit. $30k lesson. Let me know when the police auction is please

This guy definitely deserves punishment, but I get the feeling these sorts of stories get the attention because the texting morons out there need to feel like they're not part of the problem.

There is just all sorts of wrong not only with what's in the footage, but in the responses in this thread. It's not really even worth commenting on ...

... except to make these points:
- This happens far, far less often in Europe than the U.S. -- yet it still does happen. There are multiple lessons to be learned from that by dipwad 'Murricans (of which I am one).
- A driver's license is a privilege, not a right, in all societies. It should be treated as such. You get caught breaking rules, you lose the privilege -- and you continue to break rules without the privilege, you get fined heavily or go to jail. Simple as that.
- Cars are deadly weapons. This may sound extreme to some, but driving like that is like brandishing a gun toward others. Those others are going to react to it -- freeze, duck, cower, maybe even lash out -- and create reactions among those around them. All it takes is someone slamming on their brakes as a reaction to the lane changing in a scenario like that to cause carnage and death. Who would unquestionably be to blame for the reaction? The BMW drivers, because one extreme action precipitates another action no matter what the intent of the initial action. And in such a scenario, the BMW drivers should be prosecuted for felony manslaughter at a minimum. Since no one died and there was no intent, was the action reckless? Of course. What's the punishment for reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon? It varies by state, but it's generally a felony ... and this guy's got a history, so I say book him and throw away the key for a while.

MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Police on Long Island have arrested a Bronx man for allegedly racing his BMW upwards of 100 mph on the Long Island Expressway.

As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported, police said they were able to identify the suspect because a second BMW driver posted it all on social media. The shocking video had police and other drivers outraged.

The video, posted on YouTube and Facebook, showed at least two drivers speeding between lanes, careening in and out of the high-occupancy vehicle lane, and racing along the LIE mid-morning last week.

“He’s operating that vehicle, by our estimates, in the neighborhood of 100 miles an hour, and he’s not a professional driver,” said Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter. “And if he makes a mistake, then people are going to die. That’s depraved indifference.”

From the social media postings, police said they tracked down the owner of the blue BMW – identified as Darran Anderson, 23 – outside his Bronx home. Police said they also confiscated his vehicle there.

“He’s a poster child. If you look at his driving history, he has an open speeding ticket in the Bronx, and he has a number of other violations,” Krumpter said.

Krumpter said Anderson is facing only misdemeanor charges because state lawmakers have been unable to agree on measures upgrading reckless speeding to a felony.

“He’s really a dangerous person,” said Millie Palumbo of Wantagh.

Meanwhile, Nassau County residents told CBS2 they are fed up with drivers who use the highway as a racetrack, and place other drivers at risk of a serious collision.

“It’s terrible that other people will be involved in an accident because of his irresponsible way of living,” Palumbo said.

Police said they believe at least three drivers were racing as they headed for a car show at a Nassau County dealership, including the passenger, who posted the video and can be seen briefly in the side mirror.

“That second individual, the one who is posting this video, we are very close to identifying him,” said Nassau County Police Detective Sgt. Patrick Ryder.

Police said they will now move to seize Anderson’s BMW under the county’s forfeiture law – even as the search continues for the person who posted the high-speed highway race.

If convicted of reckless endangerment, Anderson could face up to a year in jail. His next court appearance is July 16.
This was really reckless. Personally I would never do such a thing.

Uh, when in a public place and there is ZERO expectation of privacy. As such, people can take photos of whomever and whatever they like. The basic rule is do not do anything in public that you do not want posted on a billboard next to the freeway or on social media. If that makes you uncomfortable stay home with the shades down.

As for social media, it is not the problem. The problem is stupid people.

My suffix-o-meter is stuck back at "spiritedly".

I remember my first experience driving in the SF Bay area, 101 parking lot morning commute. Guy on a motorcycle weaves up between cars and I get all "WTF?!? A-hole!!!" only to find out later it's legal.

That was weaving through traffic, but it was also at 15mph. What the a-hole in the video here was doing was not only illegal, it was wanton and williful endangerment of other people's lives. He should just man up/shut up and take his punishment. IMESHO.
