Long story short:

Comfort - You'll use this when you're hungover or when the wife/gf is in the car

Sport - When you want a little "oomph" but need full traction (maybe it's very wet outside)

Sport+ - Backroads + Track (no drift) - If you're like me you'll use this 99% of the time

MDM - When you want to make lots of noise at low speeds around town - Not suitable for the track. You'll see what I mean.

DSC OFF - Burnouts + Track (drift)

You can refer to this chart to see what settings each mode controls:

I've read dozens of articles, threads, and posts and this is the best summary of the drive modes that i've seen. Thank you for that. I think I have about as good an understanding as I can have without actually having the car and only driving it once. I can't wait to experiment further.

Code in the Euro MDM. It gives you some more yaw rate before the nannies kick in.

"MDM" is the stupid terminology in the manual for what they should call "DSC half-off." It gets confusing because in some places, the "TRACTION" mode is also called "MDM," which doesn't really make sense since "MDM" is supposed to mean "M Dynamic Mode." The throttle and steering mappings in "TRACTION" are equivalent to Comfort mode, so calling it "MDM" is kind of a farce.

Basically: short press traction control button = driving in snow / sand / mud (you want some wheelspin allowed but you also want a dampened throttle), or you want to make a lot of noise ("hidden pops and bangs mode")...
long press traction control button ("DSC OFF") = only way to drift
Sport+ = combination of Sport and short press ESC, but throttle is artificially overboosted

After driving around in Comfort or even Sport, Sport+ can feel pretty crazy. What's even more insane though is how much traction control is still interfering even in "MDM" / half-off in Sport+. When you try giving it some good throttle in DSC OFF mode, it's surprising how much more power the car has to give, especially in 1st... but you'll just end up sliding the ass / spinning the tires, so it's understandable why it is intervening.
Traction mode for warm up. Car doesn't cool as fast in this mode so it's good for getting up to temp faster, has MDM on, and sport shift speed if DCT.

Sport for wet roads because all nannies on but less boring than comfort. Crisp DCT shifts.

Sport+ when the car is warmed up. Has MDM and most aggressive throttle and hardest shifts. For track if you don't know what you're doing.

DSC off. Track if you know what you're doing. Drifting, burnouts, goofing off where it's safe.

Comfort if you want it to be most quiet.

They have a Black Shadow @ my dealer here in Jacksonville if anyone is interested. I had a part replace under warranty last week and wanted to see it. It wasn't on the floor. Apparently it had suffered some wheel\tire damage (off the truck?) and they had it in the back until they could get it fixed. Those black wheels take a while to source even for the dealer, apparently.

Skip Dinan and get a catted downpipe. You'll get sound and performance.

Beautiful car.

But for $63k you can buy a used low mileage M4 and extra money for some goodies or rainy day savings if something goes wrong.

It's an upgrade. S3 has too many sensors, computers, and nannies involved in all aspects of driving. It's feels too easy to drive like a simulator almost.

don't get me wrong it was a great car but the M2 feels like an upgrade.

Curious why you'd cover only half of the hood?

It couldn't cost that much more to put Xpel on the entire hood, and it would eliminate a visible seam.....

I covered the entire front of my car, wheel wells, both doors, mirrors, headlights (I didn't think headlights were necessary, but the installer said it was a good idea), and rear wheel wells...

Also put some film below trunk, on the horizontal portion where luggage might be lifted up to, before putting it in the trunk.

In any case, enjoy your car! Black Shadow sounds amazing!
