Nurburgring Tourist Day
My wife and I are doing ED during 9/17 - 9/28...our basic research determined that 9/26 would be a good day to drive on the nurgurgring. Can anyone confirm that and/or show me what's the best way to be sure please?

What time does the ring open during that day? You can’t predict weather so anytime is good if the weather is great.
I will be at the ring early October. |

Check the calendar on the 'Ring website - tourist laps are not available every day but it's often open weekdays around 5pm to 7pm, but the times vary slightly. I made sure I worked it into my itinerary on a day when they had tourist laps, and noted the exact times that day (for example, in my case, it was 10/10/2017, open 5:15pm to 7:00pm, though we never made it but that's another story).

Check the ring's website. Also, the weather is very unpredictable here so be prepared for anything. Another piece of advice is that the track often gets shut down during tourist drives due to accidents. I can't tell you how many times I've been up there after work to do a lap just to drive home empty handed due to an accident. Weekdays are better though, less people and traffic to deal with.

I read that over in the M3/M4 forum. A member had a crash on the ring while doing ED in his M3 (I think) and because of the recent switch in insurance companies, he was not covered for the accident.

The website (https://www.greenhelldriving.nuerburgring.de/#/landing) or the app will give you opening hours.
Because of questions about the insurance, the fact that my M2 wasn't broken in and the fact that the possible ring days were in the middle of my ED, I decided to rent a different car for track use. |

If you are new to driving on track, you could do worse than getting an instructor, even in your own car. |

I would try and time it when there isn't a whole lot of people going out. It will be easy to see when you get there. A lot of people are focused on their "lap time" and will cut you off or push you off the road so that they can take the racing line. With that being said, I think you'll be alright if you go slow and take it easy. That track is so much fun to drive. Hit me up if you have any specific questions.

I'm going to ask them at the Welt if the ring is covered under insurance. A total crack up uninsured would be $60,000. + in addition they make you pay for damage to the track. Of course if anyone else is involved and the accident is your fault then you'd be responsible for their car as well. I wouldn't do it without insurance coverage.

Here's the post from the F8X forum: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=504
BMW really messed this up. Policy changed and people weren't notified (they are now). OP, don't do it. Rent a car that is covered or take a Ring Taxi. The idea of driving on the Ring without any insurance is terrifying. It's not just you and your car, but as mentioned, if other cars are involved or if someone is injured... And, if you are hit by someone who also dosesn't have insurance, you'll also be out of luck. Hopefully BMW will re-instate coverage for Tourist Day driving on the Ring.

It is a bucket list item for me and I want one of the photographers to snap a picture of me lapping the Ring. How boring it is downloading a picture of you lapping the Ring in a rental car and having it on your garage wall. Nearly not as memorable as in your own car that you plan to keep for a very very long time. The OP who crashed his M3, it was a single car accident and he clearly was pushing the limits of his car. Yes someone can still hit you depends but it all depends if you want to take that chance or not.

There is always the possibility of getting track day insurance for your car.
Don't expect it to be cheap given the rates I saw on rentals but there are companies that will insure. Have not used but here are a couple: https://www.insuremytrackday.com/faqs/ http://www.mismotorsport.com/track-day-quote/ |

I did a touristenfahrten on July 4th after the break-in service. It was awesome to see all the other cars that show up to drive it and to have my 10 year old in the back saying "Go Faster!". While my wife was crying in fear as I passed a few cars. Just stay to the right and don't be stupid. My only regret was not taking another lap. Maybe on my next ED. Also if you want a crazy fast ride, the Porsche ring taxis were flying that day on the rain soaked track.

Nomo, what time do you pick up your car at the Welt on the 17th (I presume)?
We'll be there too, and we're going to the Ring a few days later, but we won't drive on it -- at least not in our own car. The new insurance limitation via BMW is a bummer... |
