I have a question to you all to see where the used market is at, the following are estimates of used private party values:

- - - - 5,000 mi \ 20,000 mi

2016 \ $45,000 \ $42,500

2017 \ $47,000 \ $44,500

2018 \ $49,000 \ $47,000

Estimates come from a combination of KBB, Edmonds, nada, etc.


Those numbers are a little lower than most asking prices, but do you think they are in line with actual sale prices?

I'd appreciate opinions on what is a better deal in the chart above, for example is it better to spend $2,500 more for a car with 15,000 miles less? Is it worth paying $2k more to get a 2018 over a 2017, or $4k more to get a 2018 over a 2016 with similar miles?

I know answers may differ, but I'd like to hear your opinions.

I'm comparing used private party values because I plan to only purchase private party due to the tax savings in AZ. Thanks!

For me it depends if this is a keep long car or a keep a few years car. If you only plan to have it a few years I would go with 2018 5k miles. Because you have warranty and hopefully better resale compared to other ones.

If it's a long term car, and you don't mind it being pre-LCI then I'd go either 2016 or 2017 with 5k miles

If it's short term go with 18. Better resale value when it's time to trade.

Thanks, is that mainly due to the LCI or just it being a year newer?

They're all pretty much the same car/experience. If I was going used, I'd probaby opt for a lower mile 2016 since it's taken the most depreciation. I think there is no wrong answer, just make sure you get that PPI.

I would wait until the M2C is available. All the reference prices will be two high in a few months.

Thanks for the recommendation, I almost purchased an M2 last summer and decided to wait. Yes, prices are lower today one year later and they will be lower again a year from now but I can’t play that game forever.

You just need to wait a few months until the M2Cs start shipping. I think I heard that August 17th was the official release date.

Just be aware some M2 in the used market maybe former BMW Performance school cars or privately tracked cars, there is reason the residual value of M2 set so low by BMWNA, cause they predict many will be tracked.

I've been shopping for used BMW in the past, twice I decided to opt to pay more for brand new one; it's like finding needle in haystack looking for that perfect used ones.

Thanks for the replies, right now it’s narrowed to a 2016 with exec pkg and a 2018 without exec pkg, both about 5,000mi. The 2018 would be about $4k more.

Normally, BMWs depreciate like a snowball running down a mountain in hell. M-cars depreciate more slowly but they still depreciate a lot over time, and the first two years can be brutal. If the difference in the prices you were being offered was in line with the usual BMW depreciation curve, then I'd probably buy the older one, all other things being equal. But $4000? That's lunch money.

I agree. The 2016 should be at least $10K cheaper.

I would think you'd be able to get a new one with minimal options around $52k...some of them have been sitting now since last November.

Thanks, I've looked into this and probably would have opted for a new one if I wasn't saving sales tax on a private party purchase. I am in the process of buying a low mileage 2018 from a private party. Buying private will save me $4-5,000 in sales tax as AZ doesn't charge a sales tax on private party car sales. So I'm saving $10,000+ vs buying new and paying fees and taxes.

Plus, my local dealers all still want MSRP on the 2018s they have in stock.

Here in WA, we have used tax. Buying used-car incurs sales tax. If DMV sees the bill-of-sales from private party and within blue book gov't will honor that sales price be used to calculate the tax from; else they'll use blue-book value. Forget using excuses, "well this car was a gift from my uncle and aunt"

So how in the world a gov't/city can declare bankruptcy like Detroit etc, when a single items generate at least 2-3 times sales tax revenues over the life of that item

If my comp was in production yet I'd sell you mine! 2018 M2, mineral grey, manual, exec package, moonroof, car play, ppf at entire front end including hood, quarter panels, headlights, a-pillars, leading edge of roof, door handle slots, trunk bumper edge. Super clean, no paint blemishes, dings, etc. formula 1 ceramic tint. Weather tech mats, have unused originals. 13100 miles.

gotya. I love the grey actually but I always wanted to give it some carbon accents - waste of money since you can't really notice the contrast imo...the silver will pop like crazy!
