THE ULTIMATE Turbo Upgrade Thread
With so little information on our forum regarding all of the different turbo upgrade options available, enthusiasts may not recognize the many options available for the N55 M2. This thread is an attempt to compile all of the upgrades currently available on the market to help you when choosing which route you may want to go.
Turbo upgrade options for the N55 loosely fall into three turbo stages. These stage definitions are exclusive to the N55, as stages on different motors often have different meanings. Stage 1: Hybrid turbo using stock housing with an upgraded compressor wheel. Similar spool to stock with more headroom to breath at higher rpm. Estimated 40-75hp gain.Shortcut to each manufacturer's post:
I have gathered as much information as I could find on each available option and created the following spreadsheet. I welcome any additional information, corrections, etc. which may be helpful: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing Disclaimer: I do not proclaim to be a turbo expert and am gathering the following information as a jumping off point for discussion and knowledge gathering. Feel free to add your own comments and expertise.

Dinan
"Big Turbo" Manufacturer's Description: For the racing enthusiast or those just looking for the best, this is the ultimate upgrade to fully maximize the power output of your F87 M2. The stock turbocharger is replaced with one that utlizes a larger compressor wheel that allows ~30% greater flow, thus enabling additional boost pressures at higher engine speeds while retaining efficiency. These are fully cast turbos that are manufactured to Dinan specifications along with an upgraded thrust system over the stock turbo to ensure reliable and prolonged life. In order to attain maximum advertised power gains these big turbos will need to be paired with DINANTRONICS Stage 4, as well as Dinan’s intercooler to fully regulate the boost increase and deliver a polished product although the exhaust and intake are also recommended. Benefits of the Dinan Big Turbo for the EWG N55 Engine: + Fully cast turbo that is manufactured to Dinan specifications with an upgraded thrust system thereby avoiding lengthy turnaround times caused by a core exchange program. + Larger billet compressor/impeller wheel that allows ~30% greater flow over stock which then enables additional boost to be realized while retaining efficiency. + Peak power: 446 HP @ 6500 RPM and 458 ft-lbs @ 4500 RPM with max gains of 101 HP @ 6500 RPM and 86 ft-lbs @ 4500 RPM when coupled with other Dinan Performance upgrades. + Dinan Installation instructions detail a procedure which is quicker than BMW's turbo replacement procedure saving the end-user money and time at the shop. + Includes o-rings and gaskets needed for complete installation. + Factory matching new car warranty (4yr/50k) when run in Dinan specification. + 50 State Emissions legal; CARB EO # D-176-49. TheTurboEngineers (TTE)
TTE460 Manufacturers Description: TTE460 begins as a brand new standard N55 turbocharger that we dismantle and then set about upgrading and optimising to create our upgrade turbocharger. TTE460 Turbocharger offer great power and spool for the range of N55 vehicles. The formula to making a TTE460 starts with a much larger TTE billet compressor wheel, chosen because is highly efficient, new generation type with very thin blades, creating extremely high flow for comparative size, giving a compressor map that's very wide. The Re-Profiled compressor cover is machined to a optimized tolerance to ensure maximum compressor efficiency. Also the intake pipe is larger and ported to give a smooth transition for the incoming air flow. A key part to driving the large TTE compressor and in turn making this unit produce the power advantage over stock is fitting a curved clipped turbine and shaft. This turbine gives lower back pressure and keeps EGT lower compared to stock turbine. The clipping of the turbine. Clipping reduces blade area thus increasing gas flow and so reducing back pressure and lowering exhaust gas temperatures, allowing safer higher boost level's. This process also gives a secondary advantage of removing some material, lightening the turbine thus reducing rotational mass improving moment of inertia. Precisely balancing our turbochargers is a key critical factor to become a TTE upgrade unit as longevity and performance are paramount. Good balance improves acoustics also. Subsequent great care is taken with all TTE turbochargers to achieving our balance standards. Firstly parts are balanced at slow speeds up to 2800RPM in multiple planes using our single parts machine, then components are assembled and then the CHRA is dynamically balanced, but this time depending on application at up to 250,000 RPM in multiple planes using our in house VSR machine to acquire the ultimate equilibrium, to a standard far higher than OEM. Steamspeed
STX67 Manufacturers Description: The Steam STX 67 for BMW N55 is a direct replacement stock-location turbo for BMW owners with BMW's new TwinPower (twin scroll) 3.0 l inline 6 direct injection motors (BMW engine code N55). The N55 is motor is used extensively throughout the BMW lineup, but includes: M135i (E82/E88/F20), 335i (E90/E92/F30), etc. The Steam STX 67 for BWM TwinPower N55 engines provides turnkey stock location replacement of the OEM turbo. This means your turbo will appear stock, and can utilize exhaust, intercoolers, and intakes designed for the stock turbo. Made from all brand new components, so there are no core deposits, and you don't have to return your factory turbo. The turbo is brand new instead of a rebuilt used OEM turbo. The STX 67 compressor wheel is 5-axis CNC milled billet aluminum and flows ~25-30% more than the stock turbo. STX78R Manufacturers Description: The STX 78R is quite a bit larger than the STX 67, about +11mm on the exducer side. Based strictly on the comp wheel, this turbo should be able to make between 500-600 whp, but the OEM turbine housing should limit that to some degree. Initial dyno testing will show to what degree. Base purely on inductive reasoning, this turbo should perform somewhat better than the currently popular Pure Stage 2 turbo: their turbo has wheels somewhat larger than a GTX3076R, our 78R is somewhat larger than a GTX3076R, they remachine the OEM housings, so do we, but the main difference is that our turbo has a BB center section, and Pure reuses the OEM JB CHRA. Given that the only main difference that impacts performance is that our has a BB CHRA, what does that impact? BB CHRAs have some standard advantages over JB: it is more responsive especially with transient boost, it is more efficient, it is more durable, etc. In this case, the biggest difference, I think, will be the fact that BB CHRAs can be stay efficient in spite of backpressure much better that a JB CHRA. Normally JB is fine up to 2:1, but BB can still be efficient at much higher ratios. This matters a lot in this case, because the OEM manifold/turbine housing is going to generate a lot of backpressure when you try to make over 500 whp. Specs: Bearing System: custom ceramic BB Custom Compressor wheel In:59 / Ex:78 (the size is between GTX3076 and GT3582) Custom Turbine wheel In:60 / Ex:57 (The size slightly bigger than GT3076 - In:60 / Ex:55). Flow capacity: 70 lbs/min (est.) Estimated WHP: ~550+ whp Source: STX67: http://http://steamturbochargers.com...r-upgrade.html STX78R: http://steamturbochargers.com/index....r-bmw-n55.html Steamspeed Blog: https://blog.steamspeed.com/2018/03/...w-n55-install/

What a timely thread, thank you for doing this as I was just mulling over a swap.
In my case I thinking about going with a Dinan turbo/intercooler combo. I was wondering if it would be possible to do this on a stock tune, drive it 90 miles home and then tune it? The work would be done at a dealership and the closest Dinan one is an hour and a half away. |

OP, thanks for taking your time doing the summary. I'll contribute wherever I see fit or I can.
There're two points that you will want to correct though - 1) The key to qualifying for a Stage 2 Hybrid turbo is the Turbine upgrade. It's what takes the exhaust momentum and drive the entire turbo assembly. Upgraded turbine must be freer flow and has less backpressure which unlocks top end power, huge. 2) TTE460 is a Stage Two turbo and an excellent one.

Here's a lot more information on that one:

Yeah I hear ya, I've done research to death but the internet is a black hole. At the end of the day there just aren't enough people running these to get a strong sense of how well or poorly they function relative to the competition. With that said, I personally don't care where the components come from. As with manufacturing in any country, you can get junk or really high quality stuff. Also, full disclosure... I called Steamspeed the other day and chatted with them about this turbo. In our conversation the gentleman mentioned they're willing to machine the turbo to whatever spec I want should I desire something different. Between that flexibility and the BB center section it's hard to knock the appeal. It does make me wonder why no one else has utilized a BB center section... |

I know this may be a silly question to ask, but what kind of reliability hit should one expect when pushing +100-200 HP over stock? For example, if the N55 lasts on 100k miles on average before major problems, after tuning, should I expect the lifetime of the engine to go down significantly, perhaps to 50k miles? Even less? I'm just trying to get a sense of how much damage I'll be doing to my wallet
On the other hand, if you only increase torque slightly, but allow the top end to breathe easier with a big turbo and increased fueling (preventing the torque drop off after 6k RPM) for higher top-end HP, I don't think that should effect reliability too much, right? I see that some of the companies listed above claim "OEM reliability", but that's probably referring to the turbo only, and not the system as a whole. |
