Worn OEM Shift knob
After 4 years the oem knob on my OG M2 6 speed is looking pretty worn. Looking to replace with the same knob. RealOEMParts only lists the part # for the knob/boot together. Several parts sites have the knob but hard to tell by the pics if its the "M" 6 speed knob or the ZHP knob:

After taking some pics of the stock knob I'm 99% sure its the ZHP version. The top link has a stitch pattern at the 6 o'clock position. The stock knob and ZHP version only has the stitch pattern in the 10 and 2 position. It also looks nearly identical.

I agree, guess they need to work on their descriptions.
I was under the impression that the stock knob couldn't be purchased without the shift boot, so I bought them together. My car is all but new, and the one I bought was new as well, but I always buy wear items like this. I bought 2 sets of new floor mats, and a new steering wheel as well. I'll end up with a new armrest too, just in case. |

On my M2 it's also quite worn. I found one looking OEM (stiching at 10 and 2 o'clock) from Ebay for quite cheap that I have on order. I am thinking about trying it out at least before buying and OEM one or moving on to the M-perf shifter from F2x series. If interested I can drop the link here or report back how it is when it arrives from China.

Has anyone here purchased the M Performance Shift Knob (BMW Part 51-95-2-457-454), and connected the wire in order to illuminate the gear map on top of the shifter?
I installed the knob and E-brake grip today, but I may have to take this to the dealer to see if they can connect the wire to the correct place. I’d do it but I don’t want to guess and splice into the wrong wires in the area. There are two items in that area, but again, I’m not 100% sure what they power or if they can accept another load on the circuit. |

Correct, got the new knob so I took off the old one to have a look. It is glued but it looks like it should be doable if you have a gluegun. Should probably have looked before, but well, at least the chinese knob was not more than around 23 usd.
I was honestly expecting that it would be as it was on my E90 where I just pulled the knob and could mount it to the old boot as is or with a ziptie.. |

Had a closer look and it is in fact not glued. There's a plastic bracket that and not glue. The bracket is held by some metal plates that you can push back using a flat screwdriver. Then it's just about taking it all out and off and installling the new knob 😁 |

Unfortunately no pictures as I gave it away to in exchange for a red start/stop button and ordered a M-perf shifter instead to use. I will see, will probably try to swap the boot still to keep the stiching intact as I like it more than the white one on the perf knob.
Also I see my misstake above, there is some glue but it is doable. I wrote too fast - before thinking it properly trough.. The guy I gave it to changed his OEM shifter in an F31 to it and it was held in place the same way as in our cars. He just pried the tabs open carefully after scraping off the glue some. He did the change in a few minutes. Found these treads regarding this subject, maybe it's those you're referring too? https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1448321 https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1471996 |
