Interior squeaks...driving me nuts!
So, I have a 2020 M2C that is about 9 months old and a little over 7300 miles. I have noticed an increase in this weird interior squeak just driving around. It gets worse hitting bumps and etc. I think I have isolated the issue to the seat back interacting with the center console. If I sit up and not lay into the seat back it does not occur. Has anyone else had this happen? It's not like I weigh 400lbs or anything that would put excess stress on the seat frame or whatever. It is a little annoying that this is happening on a car I spent $60K for. I get it, its not a Rolls Royce or what have you but, I would expect a little better build quality than this. Warranty maybe?

YES. My seat clicks/ticks whenever I move in my seat. Accelerate, decelerate, turn, hit a bump, shift gears, breathe, etc. I'm at 4,500 miles and it has been getting worse. And same as you - if I lean forward and take pressure off the seat back it stops.
If I push into my seat I can recreate the sound. If I tighten the bolsters and fully deflate the lumbar support it happens less, but if I inflate the lumbar support it is unbearable. I noticed if I reach my right arm around the seat and apply pressure to the plastic on the back it doesn't seem to happen, so I bought some Styrofoam blocks that I have wedged between my seat back and the back seat to apply some pressure. This has remedied the situation but is not a long term solution. I plan to have the dealership look at it when it goes in for its next service. |

BMW are notorious for rattles and squeaks, get them fixed under warranty. Do you have a moonroof (I dont think so)? Those can cause a lot of issues too.

Mine has the occasional pop from the passenger’s side a-pillar/windshield, which seems to be a common problem.
It only happens on steep incline/hill when driving in an angle (chassis flex), and not really often during normal driving. It seems to be getting less pronounced as the car breaks in, so I decided to ignore it. At least for now. Other than that, my car’s rock solid like a vault, no rattles.. knock on wood. |

It is a problem of all modern cars, no matter the manufacturer. I had a Macan Turbo with the same problem and my uncle's Porsche Targa 4S has a concert from El Congo

Every BMW I've ever owned has had some squeak or rattle that's annoying AF. I've had ride alongs with techs sitting in the back seat etc. to figure out where some of them are coming from. I prefer to have the dealer address it. Most of the time we figure out what the cause is and get it resolved. If for some reason the dealer can't resolve the issue and it's becoming a hassle to work with them I find a weekend to pull my sleeves up and start tearing the car apart. I will find you and I will end you.

Clearly I am not alone in this. My Focus RS did the same thing and it drove me nuts to the point of trading it in on the M2C. WELP...I guess I'll have the dealer look at it. Worse case scenario I get some fixed backs. Lose some weight and fix the flex problem LOL.

I have an 18 LCI and my god this car makes noises inside. I tend to get little rattles like plastic is loose inside.
I made a thread about it. I've learned to just deal with it. Sucks considering the price tag on the car. The worst is what sounds like a penny sliding back and forth near/ behind my driver seat when I make heavy turns. |

If you feel up to it, Just get stuck in and fix them. Get some trim tools, sticky felt pads, felt strips etc and a light oil spray.
TIS shows how to remove trim etc. You know your car better than anyone and where the noises are. I never go to the dealers with squeaks, I've learned the hard way the car comes back worse with more squeaks in other places too Last edited by doughboy; 01-11-2020 at 02:50 AM.. |

The biggest problem with getting the dealership to fix rattles is that they can't ever seem to hear them. I realized that the issue might be their professions are loud...could be that a lot of the mechanics out there can't actually hear the rattles as easily as some of us can.

My E91 on the other hand...it used to sound like a wooden sailing ship but after cleaning all the door seals, window seals, and back hatch seals with 50/50 alcohol/water and then applying Krytox GPL 205 to all of them, it too became silent. Well, except for it's unfortunate sunroof which rattles over bumps (glass moving) sometimes.

If you really hate your free time and have nothing better to do, go to the dealership and try to get it fixed...but be prepared for multiple trips and “i can’t hear anything” conversations. From an engineering perspective, designing a rattle free car that doesn’t weigh 5000 lbs is non trivial and requires an insane number of iterations which make it impractical. disassemble anything on your car and then think to yourself “how do i make this not rattle without adding components/weight to the car” If you’re that good or you think the BMW mechanic is, I have some crypto to sell you. |
