Yes, I've been working on a solution for the stones. Without one, it'll just happen over and over, and get worse.

The top coat on the Diamond Black and Platinum Gloss is paint mixed with clear to let the base coat shine through. If you look very close you can see the finish is almost speckled. Because of this they don't clear the wheel afterwards, which is questionable with such an expensive wheel. Mine are coated with C5 wheel armor, but that causes its own issues if the finish is damaged.

More pix if you get bored
The shop mentioned that BBS uses a single stage paint process on them.

I tried C5 on my OEM wheels and it’s holding up good, for the FI-R’s I went with one coat of CSL and 2 coats of Exo V4. I will coat the repaired wheel after it has time to cure.

They have been coated since March 2020, I only use P&S brake buster to clean them, I don’t use harsher wheel cleaners.

I am going to make some wheel scrapers out of ABS using the provided template. I am hoping they will help.
Proformance states it’s very common and they are constantly fixing stone damage on barrels of Porsche’s and McLaren’s.

Not sure why they told you that. Both the Diamond Black and Platinum Silver are the same silver, it's just the base coat that's different. It's hard to find barrel pictures, but you can see in these that the inner barrel of the PG is light grey, then the silver is applied, whereas the inner barrel of the DB is black, then the silver is applied.

I did quite a bit of research on this because I used to own a set of BBS RE wheels in Diamond Black (2005), which was actually a different finish. Not sure what year they changed it, but the new DB is less silver and more black-chrome-ish.

Found the email I was looking for. It's direct from BBS marketing. I was inquiring about what would happen if I damaged one of the wheels, trying to get a color code for DB, and how to get it repaired properly. Interesting that he didn't mention an authorized repair facility.

This makes me very interested to see how yours turn out!!

This is my response from Ken about the finish.

Hopefully your wheels will turn out fantastic and we can all feel comfortable with getting our wheels fixed if there is an issue.

I almost bought a set of BBS RE’s in 2006 for my 2005 WRX STi at the time. I ended up with a set of BBS CH’s instead.

Got a call from Proformance today to pick up the wheel and it came out great. The clear has the same texture as the factory finish, the color match is spot on as well. I am very picky and the only issue I could find was a small dirt nib that’s hard to spot.

The wheel on the left on the top photo is the one that was refinished.
On the last photo it’s on the right.

I was in love with the CH as well, because of my buddy's E46.

Any more installed pix? I'd love to see that rear tire sidewall fitment vs the front tire. It should be much more stretched, just like stock.

Ah. Yeah, that's an easy fit. The 255/35 PS4S is only .1" wider than the stock 245/35 PSS, and it has a more rounded shoulder because it's taller. Even if you were to lower the car it wouldn't rub because of how round the shoulder is.
