Many times I have read about the M2 — or other small RWD cars — rotating around you or feeling like they are rotating right around your hips. I'd read about it but never experienced it, until today. The M2 is my first RWD car; all my previous cars have been turbocharged AWD Subarus.
As I approached an intersection where I was going to turn right this afternoon, the light turned green. It was warm, I had been driving awhile, and so I figured the tires were properly warm. And I've been building confidence with this fairly new-to-me car over the past several months. So in Sport mode I downshifted to second gear as I braked for the turn. About halfway through the right hand 90° turn, I smoothly rolled on the go pedal to about 70% throttle. And that's when I felt it. The car rotated right around me. It was as though the car was on a turntable! It pointed right where I wanted to go and squirted ahead. What a feeling! In my Subarus, I could mash the pedal around the corner. While I'd never lose traction, the Subies never really hustled around the corners either. With the M2, this was a completely different experience. It's making me really look forward to the local chapter BMWCCA car control course later this summer! |

The sensation is even greater in a M/R car. A wonderful feeling of low polar moment because of the correct slip angle. It can be addicting .

That was one of the first things that stood out to me with my CS versus my previous M2's, the rotation through turns is even better- turntable is a great analogy.

Search on here, and also search using google. Include F87 in your google search phrase followed by what you’re searching for and you’ll likely find threads in the results.
The bottom line is the steering is improved. The steering isn’t nearly as heavy in sport+ and feedback is generally reported as improved. More comes through when it isn’t drown out by the artificial weight. MDM and diff coding help it where you’d expect. Managing power on track and when sliding the car around. I consider it a must have for any OG. |

I'm curious as to why, what's different… higher camber hubs, cup 2 tires, suspension. What else is helping turn is/am I missing? Same software as the M2C correct?

Just for reference for others in the same boat as me that didn't know about this, here are a couple great references that I found about the steering, diff, and MDM software updates:

Software, adaptive shocks, different alignment, lighter wheels, and so forth.

I just added two degrees of camber up front and a TC Kline Racing suspension kit and it not only handles completely differently the steering feel is completely changed.
I use to be skeptical about the M2 CS differences but between updating the firmware and now the suspension itself I can understand why journos describe it as such a different driving experience. It is. Alignment, software, wheels/tires… they all make a difference and added up it’s actually significant. Last edited by ///393; 06-02-2022 at 06:10 PM.. |

If you REALLY want to feel some of this hip rotation sensation - drive a Z4 M Coupe. You're practically sitting on the rear axle. And the steering is hydraulic and glorious. S54 under the hood. Man I'm getting a chubby just thinking about it. I'll let myself out!
