Quote from later in the article:

"And oh, how BMW squanders an opportunity by giving us only a two-door 2-series. Just imagine a sedan and a wagon to choose from on this platform, with the same delightful cockpit and controls."

So we have to wait until maybe 2020 for a 2 series/M2 sedan while we chase the Evoque with the X2? I guess there aren't enough desperate E36/e46 pilots out there. I suppose I could just add cams and call it a day...

As the owner of an E36 4 door with two young children (9/11) that *DID* an infant and two child seats in the back seat. It's a perfectly workable size. I just want the extra doors for my kids (and maybe a couple track tires...can I stack a set of 245s? what size will the M2 need?).

I just think its great that we have so many fantastic choices these days, not just among the BMW lineup but across many manufactures

As an owner of f30, I am glad that it's been off the list since 2er is out. I am wishing it's gone forever knowing what G20 would be like.

The whole trend BMW pursue to survive is depressing. The world needs such voices so there'll be something correct left for BMW to build for people like us.

The M2 is considered a small car but when I was carefully measuring out the parking space available for it under the overhang in front of my house, I realised that my 330d Touring is 4478 mm. and the M2 is 4468 mm. I have always considered my 330d to be a big car and it's only what, less than half an inch longer than the M2 !

Wouldn't the base chassis b the same or are you referring to the rolling chassis? the suspension and transmission is different, but the frame and most of the engine is similar, no?

I wonder if the people who shop for a 3er today would have shopped for a 5er 10 years ago? Like some have said, the 3er today is basically what a 5er was. It's grown too big for my tastes. Glad the 240 and M2 take the cake this time because their size is the sweet spot for me.

You are definitely well on your way to being an old curmudgeon

I'm actually a person that is HIGHLY CRITICAL of why BMW didn't make a 2 series sedan ( aka gran coupe) and also make it in M2 guise. I would buy one immediately and it would be in the garage along with my 1M.

If they had, then the ten best would actually have had better options in sedan form than the Mazda 3 and Honda Accord.

I'm a lot less concerned about your priorities than my own, but As far as your personal issues with not wanting to " wrestle a a baby into the back of a tiny coupe. ..

I had no problems with my placing my kiddo in the back of an E30 M3 from birth. I flatly refused to trade my sports car for a minivan or even a Honda Accord sedan like my ex wanted me to.. My daughter, for her part , absolutely LOVED riding in the back of my E30 M3 and I can still hear her giggles today !

I guess I'm just a little bit more of an enthusiast than some because that TEN BEST list still works for me. ....

looking back at the 2016 Ten best.. for 2017.. . the Chevy Bolt and Chevy Corvette appears to have replaced the Cadllac CTS Vsport and the Tesla P90D ... the other 8 vehicles are the same. In prior years the Audi A6 and Mazda 6 and of course the BMW 3 series have also made the cut...so it does appear that sedan representation is dropping as those sedans get larger.

Perhaps in a few years an X2M or X3M or Porsche Macan crossover will make the list.. sign of the times..

Damn! Robin got there before me, with pictures.

But did you also factor in the whole new chassis you get if you buy an M2? Compared to an RS3, or A45, the M2 chassis is very, very different to the car its based on. I think that because so much of the work done on the M2 is under the skin (subframe transplant and modification, suspension and steering tuning, etc.) it doesn't get included in the price comparison.

FWIW, M2 is 2.7 seconds faster per lap @ Sachsenring, Germany than M240i.

They call the m3/m4 f80/f82. And 3 f30/f32. Based off same chassis.

It's just variations of engine, cooling, suspension and interior parts.

Ready for a new chassis - aren't u?

The 3 is ever so slightly larger than I would prefer. However, the problem I have with the 2 is the styling of the rear end. It's like they intentionally made it look bad as to not cannibalize too many 3er sales. Also don't like how the wheels have no depth to them.

Sure, once you're in it. What about getting out? I got tired of listening to people complain about getting in and out of the back of my e92.

Good luck with that 340 GC. However, you are in luck. There is a 440 GC. It's not available with a manual though. Not on our market at least.
