Car and Driver has just announced their 2017 10Best Cars list and the M2/M240i has made the list!

Full writeup @ http://www.caranddriver.com/features...t-cars-feature

"This year, 10Best again proved that there are some nice cars to choose from if you’ve budgeted $40,000 to $50,000, but few are as entertaining as BMW’s top 2-series models, with their combination of humble size; pouncing, liquid thrust from the optional six pots; and piano-*wire tension to the controls. You can see why we picked the M235i last year, but the world keeps turning. The 2-series lineup gets new monikers: The 230i replaces the 228i as the base four-cylinder; the M235i becomes the M240i; and now there’s the juiced M2, basically an M240i with flares, chairs, tires, brakes, and a suspension tune, plus another 30 horsepower (though it can only match the M240i’s torque with a time-limited overboost function)."

"The M240i has a sporting suspension, but it won’t liberate any loose dentistry. The rigid M2 will, this extremist shaking our fillings over the rougher sections as the steering sniffed feverishly for apexes. The M2 prefers corners to straights the same way a German shepherd prefers pork chops to applesauce, but that’s part of its hyperactive charm. Cars like the M2 form the radioactive core of BMW’s performance credibility, and the M240i backs off just enough to please drivers who find it a little too hot at the center."

"Thus, in our little Goldilocks scenario, in which all the chairs were tried, the adoration inevitably fell back on the BMW. Not the 3-series, which has grown too large and too mainstream to any *longer earn our passion, but the smaller 2-series, which is just under a foot shorter than an A4 and reminds us of E30s and E46s and the Way Things Used to Be. BMW is at heart a small-vehicle company, a course set in 1959 when Herbert Quandt saved the ailing maker of princely handmade bolides and diverted its resources into the 1961 1500, instantly creating the market for compact sports sedans."

I still would rather have the 240i...it just makes more sense comparing performance and value between the two

I can see where your coming from. But value? Factor in resale and options. The value really isn't there for me. Can't go wrong with either one though. The b58 is shaping up to be a great.

It's just harder to get an M2. If all your looking at it value for money. The M2 wipes the floor with the 240i

Throw 2 or 3 basic options on the 240 and look again at the price difference

The 2-series lineup is BMW's concession to enthusiasts of the E36 and E46, IMO.

Nice results in the list for the American V8 cars.

True I agree with you. But as the previous poster said the resale value is very far apart.

2 series for the win! In Canada, the price is mad skewed, new m2s are going for mid 70s. A decked m240 can be had for like 10k less.
Both are great, but let's get real, you can get a gt350 here for the 70 range.

Two in the pink, one in the stink shocker...

C&D was enamored with the 235i last year. The 240i dials it up to 9 with the fantastic B58 and the M2 dials it up to 11 because well, it's the quintessential M.

I've test driven most new BMW models and the 2 series always seems to stand out for its fun to drive factor. The current 3 is just too big IMO to toss around.

Resale should indeed be part of the equation. On the imaginary resale race-track, the M240i gets indeed a head start, but is soon overtaken by the M2 as time goes by. And the M2 is already parked in the garage with its winner trophy when the M240i crosses the finish. Only the 1M can beat the M2 on that imaginary race-track. M3/M4 ain't no competition for the M2 over there.

I know which one I want... an M2!!! I have Artemis to thank for letting me "test" his M2 in the Alps.

Agree with @asburyn54.

@Chris330... the 240 can be a better value on the initial purchase.. However it is not a better value when it comes time to sell.. Any M Car easily has a better value at resale than the underlying models.

What's an E30 325 worth vs an E30 M3 today? Do the same for E36.. E46 .. on up the line ..

Only about $3k MSRP to MSRP. But 240s can be had for thousands off, and no wait. So $6k? $7k difference?

BMW has been taking Ls for few years now. They can gladly hold a W for once.

chassis chassis chassis.

these cars dyno stock with over 400lbs ft. they are so much more fun to drive in the corners in the lower rpms. they are squirty, and pivot with the best. The diff is incredible and the tech the car has is perfect for the package. For a 50K car, cant beat the chassis.

This 10 best is uninteresting to me. My dealer offered me an M2 allocation since my dad ordered an individual M4 at the same time. But I chose the 340i because I needed a bigger car. While I wanted an M2 it didn't make sense as a DD. And a Anything else on this list near the price of the 340i/M2 is even worse of a choice as a DD for me

Couldn't be happier with my switch from a 3-series daily to an M2 daily. Still have backseats and big trunk, but much more fun to drive.
