M2 Economical track tire
Hello Friends!
I've had my M2 for 2 years now it's reaching 40k km, I'm running MPSS on the OEM rims. I haven't participated much in the forum, but the amount of information I've gotten is incredible! Thank you! I have a couple of questions... Following a discussion with my track instructor, he strongly suggest I do NOT fit pilot cup 2 tires on my car yet, as I'm only at a couple of track days. He instead recommended I fit cheaper tires, and focus on learning the tracks (mainly spa), he also suggested that the lower grip tires would put less stress on the car. Question 1: Do any of you have experience on track with a cheaper tire than the MPSS or PS4S? If so could you please recommend? Question 2: I am currently near the end of my MPSS, and am about to upgrade to PS4S. There is about .5-1mm left of thread on the rear, before reaching the marker. I do feel a significant loss of grip compared to new... Do you think I could still run this set for a light 2 hours on track? Thank you all in advance!!! I will drop a couple of pics of my ride below |

Try Hankook RS4s. That's what we all use for WRL endurance racing. 8hrs nonstop racing and there is usually a little left over.

Regarding your current tires. It all depends how much meat you have left on outer sides. If you don't have camber and you were pushing hard before, your tires might be toast even when still having 5mm in the groove.
For sliding and drifting its perfect, not so much for grip 😉 |

As someone else mentioned, get some federal rsrr's. I've been running them for track days and they hold up pretty well. They are extremely loud, but pretty much a non issue on the track. They're also dirt cheap, pretty much the cheapest 200tw tire you can find that won't fall apart.

To the US guys, we can't get the Hankook RS4 over here (or I couldnt find them, even on their EU hompages).
In the EU I would recommend: Federal 595 RSR (model will depend on tire size) Nankang NS-2R (similar performance to Federal) Nankang AR1 (much higher performance than the above 2 options). I am running 265/35/18 and 285/35/18 NS-2R and loving it, appart from a huge vibration I have running these tires. Still trying to figure out what it is. I had another set of these tires and it is not normal for them. The tires have great dry/hot grip, great longevity, surprising wet grip (when new), a high temp and pressure range that they work at, and are pretty quiet for a racy tire. Your instructor is correct in stating you should start with lower grip tires. 1) this stresses components less (max sustained G-forces will be less). 2) If you overdo it the speeds will be less when you start to slide. 3) An ultimate performance tire bites when you go over the limit, a less performing tire should break away more evenly and predictably, allowing you to catch slides. I recommend you do a drift day in your M2, it will teach you a great deal about what to do when you go over the limit. M2 is pretty easy to drift once you get the timing down Oh and come visit us at Zandvoort or Assen. Assen is like a flat Spa hahah.

Thank you for the recommendations guys!
Megator, Thank you for the euro tire's, I was looking up some of the mentioned tires, but like you said they are hard to get a hold of here in Europe. I am looking forward to driving Zandvoort! Let me know if you hit any track days! Do you recommend any drift days ? Thanks for the advice! |

As for drifting I really like how these guys organise, their beginner day https://driftsport.nl/. It is all on a wet skidpan and at worst you will hit a small cone with a small scratch as a result. You start doing a single drift left or right. Then you advance to drifting a cone course. You can also rent special drift tires (which I recommend). These tires are like full slicks so the speeds needed to drift are much lower. Street tires also take a beating when drifting. Here is a list of places close to NL for drifting https://driftdude.nl/Agenda.html I do not recommend most of them till you have some practice. This might be closer but no personal experience https://www.skylimitevents.be/sectio...en-wagen-.html I went with skylimit to Spa and their organization was good

While I haven't done any track days on em, I bought some Federal RS-RR's for my Miata, which is being built for track duty. Even using on the streets, they're great, a little noisy but nothing crazy. They have a tremendous amount of grip, and they're stupid cheap.
