I also have the cold start tinning sound on cold start for about 5-10 seconds. I ensured all my CF tips were pushed in and seated correctly. I also noticed the bracket between the tailpipes had a tiny gap on one side. I removed the bracket and the sound was resolved. After some research online I've seen some exhaust with them and some with out?? I dont see the need for them as the structure between the tailpipes is quite sturdy. Are these necessary clamps considering some come with it and some dont or are they a fixture from the company who makes these exhaust?
Just my experience with this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think the brackets are part of the newer versions of the MPE.
Part nr '18302412432' doesn't seem to have this where part nr. '18302454297' does.
Maybe they're using the brackets to fix the 'shaking/wobbling' issue of the exhaust tips during startup of the 1st iteration.

Appreciate the feedback! Yea I'm gonna leave them off for now and if they are required I'll find a way to wrap exhaust to give some sound deadening

Took my car in to the dealer as a hail Mary. I just couldn't stand the rattling last week. Although, I doubt anything will be done.

MPE replaced

Waiting to receive my car with a new MPE installed. After 2 visits they decided to replace my MPE. After reading previous posts in this thread I am already considering my options if the new exhaust makes the same vibration noise during cold starts. Has anyone had the welding job done by their dealership?

Did the dealer find the root cause in your scenario?

I got lucky and apparently a part of the muffler was the cause. The muffler portion was replaced under warranty.

Had the dealer install a brand new MPE exhaust on my 2017 m2. I ordered the CF tips separately and just installed them today, a few weeks after the original install of the MPE.

Massive rattle, where none was perceived before the installation of the tips. It is almost as if the extra weight at the end of the exhaust causes a strange frequency to occur.

Additionally, the tips are not well aligned (I ensured they were properly seated), and the inner tips stick out past the diffuser. Does this sound like the dealer didn't install this exhaust correctly?

I fixed the rattle on my MPE with:
- Unscrew tips
- Use a rubber hammer to make sure they're as far back as possible
- Screw tips tighter than stock spec

I've seen somewhere that someone uses some sort of tape between the exhaust and the tips, that could also help.

Every example I've seen, including my own, the tips do stick out further than the stock diffuser.

Thanks guys - I'm literally at the point where I may just have the ECU flashed to get rid of the cold start...well might as well remove the limiter at that point as well

Pretty much what my conclusion was.
Problem is, that the solution above can lead to tips sticking out differently from left to right, see my post:

Still absolutely love it, but the metallic rattle is annoying during the cold start, just sounds "wrong".

I feel like it is kind of is a big deal. When you spend thousands of dollars on a product (an oem one at that) it ought to be a quality item.

If I lived in Suburbia I would agree with you, not that big of a deal. The problem is this mofo shakes the windows of my neighbor's apartments in the morning and I've received complaints

I had this problem with my stock exhaust. Rattle would go away when warm then became constant.

Does the newer MPE come with that dimple button for the US? I have the V1 MPE and I am frustrated with the rattle. My 2 year parts warranty is about to expire, but I don't want to change MPEs if the new one has the silly red button in the trunk.

What's the difference between the two versions, does anyone know?

That version is for the UK (and maybe other locations) because of some dumb law. USA version does not have the red trunk button.

I took the car to my dealer last week to get the rattling resolved. They replaced the 4 carbon tips for new ones, but they still rattle. Yesterday I placed some aluminum tape on the exhaust, but it didn't help. I guess it's not thick enough to make a difference.

I guess I'll ask my dealer to replace the tips again, but this time for the newer style tips (part number 18302468411). These tips are shorter and have a different mounting mechanism (a clamp instead of a single screw).

Not sure if these fit the MPE tho.

What year was your MPE installed? Does yours have the clamps pictured here? Seems to me BMW added them to address the rattle issue.

Yup mine has the clamps. The exhaust is fitted around December 2017. It’s version 2

Took mine into the dealership a few months ago for this. The rattle was inside the muffler itself. They replaced it for me and the rattle went away.
