I think part of the nature of this car is being a jack of all trades. Owing to this, I think either transmission choice probably works well with the car to bring out various parts of its personality.

It kind of manages to dance on that line between being old school and being straight up fuck-off fast. Muscle cars like the Mustang and Camaro lean a little towards the old school side of things for me and so i'm always a little sad when i see those cars with an auto. On the other hand, cars like the Audi RS3 exist simply to tear your face off in an easily controllable manner, while being as practical as possible. Even a 3-pedal elitist like myself has to admit that cool as it might be to see a manual RS3, a dual-clutch makes a hell of a lot more sense.

The M2C is right in the middle. DCT and M/T both somehow make a ton of sense in this car.

This is super true. I got myself the MT, but there have been times where i admit i opted for the DCT because it would allow me to really enjoy the power delivery with only needing to just put one foot down.

Either way this car has been amazing so far.

Kutta, MoFlow and Xyion

This a very interesting topic to which I wanted to add my $0.02.

I am former MT fanboy converted PDK enthusiast. More specifically, PDK manual mode enthusiast. I am under impression BMW DCT is similar and equally capable.

In PDK manual mode I can control the revs and shift points, just as with true MT - except even easier. I live in a relatively rural area that allows me to routinely wring-out my CGTS, living in the heart of the power band - and mostly 2nd or 3rd gears. Paddle shifting is fine, but I do prefer having my hand on the shifter, as I find it soothing to the MT fanboy that remains in me . . . I do not miss the clutch.

In short, PDK manual mode allows me to enjoy everything I enjoyed about my past MTs, but has several advantages. For example, the PDK manual mode allows power shifting, which I am certain is also true of the DCT!

I understand that PDK/DCT does not offer a certain element of 'engagement' many enthusiasts have come to enjoy with a true MT. Personally, with PDK manual mode I feel more than engaged and enjoy all the performance aspects many enjoy with a true MT. . . and then some.

I highly advice anyone on the fence about converting from MT to DCT to try DCT manual mode before drawing final conclusion.

Oh dont get me wrong i do not have a biased against Automatic transmissions at all. However the thing really keeping me away honestly is just that there are so many more gears. I just cant seem to wrap my head around have shorter gears down low with super long gears up high. I'm sure if i had enough time with it, it would be fine. But its a weird reason and the main reason. Honestly other than that, i do love the engagement of using a clutch.

End of the day though what really makes me decide between an automatic vs a MT is just how much power the car has. I think with the M2C i'm right at the cusp where i almost prefer the DCT over the MT. But i think just because i've always drive "low power" cars (BRZ, S2000, Focus/Fiesta ST. Miata) its just something i'm more used to. But there is a certain point of power where in my mind, having a manual just doesnt make sense anymore.

The many times I've driven in NYC traffic, I've had 0 regrets picking the DCT. I would've been happy either way to be honest. The only time I regret DCT is when I think about selling the car in the future, but I also have a moonroof which doesn't help with that either.

I'm hoping to keep the car forever anyways so I guess I shouldn't care.

I hope my enthusiasm is not construed as me trying to convince you of what is best for you, or anyone else. As I said, I am a converted MT fanboy, so it took me some time and convincing of myself.

Regarding the gearing, well, I am not even certain my PDK truly has 7 gears, as I rarely ever get out of 2nd or 3rd gear.

I dont even consider the DCT an automatic (its not), and on the M2 I shift my own gears all the time with the DCT. It gives me the control that I desire with a MT, without having to deal with a third pedal which I'm not sure I'd appreciate all the time driving in the urban environments that I do drive in. I have had a "manumatic" in every car I've had since my MT days, and I hardly shift on my own unless I'm in the mountains, so there is certainly something about the DCT that gives it a real manual experience (or its just the M2C).

Either way, I still envy the guys rowing gears in their M2Cs in the Youtube videos. But it will be sad to see the DTC go away in the next gen M2. May have to really consider a MT then

I think I'm an "old-timer" here as my first car was a '74 2002, followed by a 320i, 325is, etc. All MT, of course, where I mastered heel-and-toe and double clutching.

More recently, I've owned a '16 M2, '17 M2, and my current '19 M2Comp. All DCTs. Now waiting for my CS which will also be DCT.

I know, and as informed by my son - who was previously BMW Delivery Specialist, now with Porsche - he told me that for resale, MT is more desirable. But I find DCT so good for DD, and on track, you just can't beat the constant power delivery and instant downshifting while late braking into corners.

And then there're the days when having the DCT, and leaving it in auto mode, is the only reason one manages to get home. Work has been a horror show this week, and yesterday was the 3rd 13 hour work day of the week (not a normal thing...big crisis). When I got down to my car yesterday, I had nothing left. Just nothing. I'm a huge manual fanatic and I've been vaguely angry with myself for the last 18 months for not getting the manual.

Last night, the only reason I was able to drive home safely with the energy I had left was auto mode on the DCT. If I'd had to do one more thing past steering and keeping my distance from people, it would have been too much. So, thank you DCT, for the first time, thank you.

Oh no i didnt take it that way at all. Honestly i seriously considered the DCT myself but i knew i'd regret it if i didnt get the MT. My girlfriend is planning on getting a Porsche within the next year or so and will most likley get it with the PDK which i hear is amazing. She currently drives a GTI with the DSG transmission which honestly in itself blows my mind.
