Cracked windshield

So I have had my car for 7 days. I was off work today and thought how much fun it would be to take my new toy out on one of the routes I ride my motorcycle. This one is about 100 miles and 95% of it is nice and windy scenic back country roads. I was about 20 miles in having a great time then out of nowhere BAM! a truck in front of me kicks up a rock and cracks my windshield at the top right side. Starts out as just a rock chip, but has continued to grow to about 4 inches. I have Safelite coming out tomorrow to see if they can repair it, but I am guessing it will need to be replaced. I shouldn't complain, when I bought my 2014 Mustang I hit a deer within the first month and did $4K worth of damage. Come to think of it that car was Grabber blue, maybe I am cured when I buy a new blue vehicle??? Honestly though if that is all that happens to this car I will be very thankful. Okay, done pouting about my luck today...

Other than that the drive was incredible and I am 100% happy I chose the manual transmission.

Better than a paint chip or dent. Make sure they install an OEM windshield (insist on it) and you wont know the difference

I agree, just sucks dealing with it already. My insurance will replace everything with OEM without argument if the vehicle is under 2 years old, so that should not be a problem.

Yeah, sucks it happened to you so soon, but its just glass. Like my car wash guys says "never follow anyone too closely". Easier said than done in an M2

You know... Since you're forced to change the windshield, and replacing the windshield is the most bothersome part of installing a cf roof, you could treat this as a blessing in disguise and get an RKP cf roof (bit north of a grand) and get insurance company to cover big part of the install

Just saying

The same thing happened to me. About a month into ownership, engine wasnt even broken in yet. I had the dealership replace it, since I was going through insurance anyway. I’ve seen a couple of horror stories from windshields not being replaced properly. If they’re not super diligent about the sealing, moisture can get in there and rot your frame.

Just curious because I've seen the CF roof at IND for about $1200, but what is the approximate labor cost?

Thanks

noooo already? Man that sucks. Hope nothing else happens. Similar thing happened to me when i got my BRZ. I was about a month in, had just gotten the entire car Ceramic Coated, and boom, big ass rock flies up and knocks a chunk off my windshield. I was so annoyed.

Labour hours really depends on the shop

From what I've read people have been charged anywhere from 500-1500$ for the install, so do the math for the hours

It's a bit of a hack job, there's a few threads with pics, I personally stay hesitant about doing it because of the windshield but in your position I'd totally bite the bullet and go for it

M2 CS look and if you even have the moonroof you'll definitely feel the lower center of gravity

I'm sure Safelite will take great care of you and your car. Sorry that happened on your brand new car. Sucks to say the least.

Thanks all for the support. Just bad timing. I have used Safelite in the past and have nothing but great things to say about them, so I am hoping for the same.

BigKutta, I hear ya, funny thing is I consciously thought, make sure you stay back a bit, you don't want a rock chip. And then...

Dav3, I would never even consider the CF roof, sorry not my thing. I am not going to hack up a perfectly good car.

Poochie, Love the movie and it made me laugh, so thank you.

I got a pretty big rock come out of no where almost straight down on my windshield around 1700 miles. Decent little spidering luckily below the actual see through part of the glass, maybe 2-3 inches across. Had Safelite stop over at my job and fix it in ~40 minutes. It's still partially visible but as long as it doesn't spread it's fine.

I paid out of pocket like 170.

Bad luck. Had mine replaced a couple weeks ago. Rock hit on outside edge, cracking about 9 or so inches across. I'd avoid the Safelite route though and go OEM. It's not cheap but heard issues about non-OEM glass and all the sensors. This was firsthand information from my installer so take it with a grain of salt.

Happened to me twice in the same year. Rock hit near the edge of the windshield and cracked instantly. Bad luck

I had a loaner 740 and cracked the windshield on the interstate the 2nd day I had it.
The wife's 540 has had a little nick in the windshield for a year. Just waiting for it to take off.
The M2C has a little spot as well.

Meanwhile our 6 year old truck has nothing on the original windshield.
SUVs we've owned never had an issue.

Little bit of luck and how sitting lower and eating all that debris destroys the glass.

I drove my 2017 Jeep Wrangler for over 2 years without a single nick in the windshield and the Wranglers are infamous about windshield rock damage because their windshields are so flat.

It is what it is, I took the hit a little harder as the car was so new to me. After sleeping on it, I have come to realize it is just a windshield. Fix or replace and move on. As they say sh*t happens.

I feel your pain, kinda. Rock hit my windshield within first couple hundred miles. Tiny little surface chip. Hasn't grown. Also got a paint chip shortly after.
