All of these car of the year vids seem to have the same line up and more or less the same results. M2 middle of the pack. Ford Fiesta ST beats it? Really? I know which one id rather have.

I still think it's some weird "hot hatch" blindness. If the thing had a trunk but was otherwise identical in all respects, these guys would quit being so weird about it.

It's sad to me that I take reviews from Chris Harris and Yuri and Jakub from The Straight Pipes more seriously than "established" sources like EVO, CAR UK, etc.

Since I bought my own M2C, I personally don't care what is the point of view of any journalist.
Articles are useful when you are thinking of buying a car. Afterwards, whether or not someone else like the car you bought will not change how you feel driving it. It is especially true with cars like the M2C. You buy such a car in order to have fun... |

EVO UK decided that a McLaren is the car of the year ?? Why I am not surprised... with all the respect to the car in question...

Well, I’ve driven the regular 570 so if they did the right bits to turn it into a 600LT, then I can believe it is special enough to win the eCOTY. The 570 is mesmerizing, like piloting a Jedi starfighter just off the road surface, not really like driving a regular car.
Compared to that exotic experience, a car like the M3, M2 etc has no chance IMO. This is a test to see who makes the most compelling drivers car, and that ain’t the M2. Add a certain budget into the equation and cars like the M2 and yes, Fiesta ST take the cake. And we always take these with a grain of salt. Like, where is the Corvette? Mustang? etc. it’s just a British COTY and with a few added biases thrown in. Entertaining but not the last word.

Even more biased. Some of the British roads are so narrow and/or bumpy as to have no analogs elsewhere. Honestly had I lived over there I too may have steered towards a more compliant suspension for a DD.

In part, this is due to road conditions (widths, camber and bumps) vs the size of the cars, but several Italian marques are known for producing models that are a bit wide (and with very poor visibility, bodywork clearance, low-speed manoeuvrability...) and are still appreciated. Some of the smaller Jeep SUVs do well over here (although they have turbo-diesel engines, some changes to interior finishes and far fewer audible warnings...), so O-CotY could be a happy hunting ground for US metal. I had my Fiesta ST for 4 months. The fun for money is unbeatable. If you're brand loyalist you will never accept the car. But without driven or spending some time with it you should not be so fast to dismiss the car.
Bang for the buck it's hard to beat it, doesn't matter if another car cost 3 times more, the drive involvement and fun is there, even if its just a "Fiesta". |

I am not saying that it is one of a kind car. However it definitely does not follow, from my point of view, the current formula of a sport car that somehow targets efficiency. Its natural stance is sideways. Not simply to be more efficient in some conditions, but as much as possible for a car used daily. For a European car, it is no more that common. At the same time it is neither cheap enough that if you trash it, you don't care, nor expensive enough that this behaviour becomes "a distinctive character for happy few" by which it may be considered as a virtue regardless of the fact that it makes sense. Beyond that, it is not universally pretty, nor includes all bells and whistles expected on latest generation car... Therefore, to be honest, I am even surprised that it does not finish last in all these "best of..." reviews |
