M2 sudden battery death

Well it looks like I have been bitten by the infamous BMW sudden battery death syndrome with the M2. The car is less than 2 years old and kept it on a tender over the winter while it wasn't being driven. Has fired up fine all spring. The other day...dead as a doorknob. Used the jump box, drove it around for 30 mins and shut it off. Dead again. Its been on a tender for 2 days now and its not holding a charge, so off to the dealership on Tuesday to see what the issue is. My car is tuned, so hopefully they don't ding me for that, but can't imagine that would be a root cause of anything.

Just an update...The dealer claimed that the diagnostic revealed that the "parking lights" were left on for over 2 hours, which I found hard to believe A) because I thought the car would auto shut them off (I could be wrong) and B) I would think I would have seen them as I'm in and out of the garage a lot. Nonetheless the dealer topped off the charge on the battery and returned the car to me...well low and behold not 24 hours later the car almost didn't turn over when I went to start it. I guess I'll be going back to the dealer and demanding a new battery or at least a new technician.

Too bad that batteries aren’t cover by either your warranty or maintenance. Make sure they check the alternator.

My wife's X3 was covered after warranty EXPIRED because of recall. Could just be a bad batch?

They supposedly checked the alternator and it tested ok. So who knows? The service manager initially told me that the battery has a limited warranty, but I'm not sure what the parameters are for getting a new one under said warranty. At this point I just want it fixed. I don't feel like driving around with a jump box in my trunk.

My battery died over the winter as well since I hadn't driven the car in months and didn't have it hooked up to a battery tender even though I have one (doh!). Anyways, it was a nice excuse to replace the battery with an Antigravity H7 60Ah battery which weighs about 40lbs less than the OEM battery:

Those Antigravity batteries are great. I have them in my Porsches.

@nothingman nice recommendation 👍

Never seen anything like that in a battery before.

It's nice, but I feel like I would need to balance the weight loss with weight removed from the front. Realistically that means CF front hood (might just try to make one myself due to the outrageous prices ).

Anti Gravity Batteries are worth every penny. I've run them in 5 cars now.

Never had trouble with any of them, and now you get the Battery Tracker pkg that lets you see your battery stats whenever you like. 3 of the batteries I've used were the 4-5 lb ones. In an EVO X, FRS & Miata ND.

I run the same battery as Nothingman in my 20M2C.

Got my AntiGravity battery last Friday and the Battery Tracker came in today. Planning to install over the weekend into the M2. Anything I need to know besides the fact that there's no coding possible, and there's no vent on this vs the stock which has one. So basically, it's a old school swap of positive and negative terminals.

Thoughts, feedback or any instructions appreciated.

It triggers the built-in jump starter if the battery is dead.

With the help of someone more capable than me, I was able to code my car to 40ah agm (I got the 40aH version). Battery registered via ESYS and coded via ISTA.

That's interesting. No issue with AGM coding on a LiFEPO4 battery? It's probably better than leaving the factory coding of 90Ah AGM …

No issues so far. Leaving it on the factory 90Ah coding didn't sit right with me.

bimmerlink is also easy to use to code if you cannot use esys, ISTA is a pretty easy to use tool as well.

I know I'm bumping an old thread here but I think the parking lights staying on that your dealer claimed might be some sort of programming flaw with our cars. I've noticed that if the lights are set to auto and the ignition is turned on and then off without starting the engine the lights will stay on...for hours.

I've noticed this previously but it didn't cause any issues because I quickly caught it and was regularly driving the car; however, it recently happened and the lights were probably on for at least a couple hours but I didn't drive the car for a week. Now, I get a "Battery Discharging While Stopped" warning message and CEL. Sure enough, the voltage on the battery drops to around 12.0 volts after a couple hours even after a fully charging the battery.

I guess I'll be buying a new battery soon...

Mine is done

If I don't keep it plugged in it won't start. I saw a low 8.8 volts and plugged it in

Hoping the dealer will replace it under the remainder of my factory warranty

Silly question or comment of the day.

Are you not supposed to use lithium ion batteries in your car if it wasn't equipped with one originally??

Personally, I would love to use one in my 17 M2 when the time comes.

I have a BMW charger that you can select regular or li-on.
