Window Tint Prophylaxis - I hope my amp survives

So my 2017 M2 is getting tints tomorrow in preparation for Summer. I'm always on edge about people working on my cars, so I decided to try my hand at protecting my amp. I removed the carpeting above the amp, removed the amp, and secured it in the middle of the trunk. I also zip tied a towel around the harness in case water decides to run down the harness.
I have to say, this location was a strange choice for an electronic component with holes in its case. Upon removal of the amp, I found there to be dirt and pebbles underneath it. I doubt they worked their way there through the carpet layers. There's a vent with flaps above the amp, I wager they came through there. Be careful washing that wheel well!
I'll report back after picking my car up tomorrow.

Good luck! I think I'd wrap the amp and as much of the wiring as I could in Cling film / Saran wrap.

I'm thinking that with how much I pulled the harness away from the inner fender that no water will come in contact. I also wrapped the amp in a hoodie lol, for shock protection. Should be ready in a few hours, we will see.

You know its funny. I remember reading about this before I bought my M2 (back in 2014 when I had my M235i the amp died for the same reason, only I think it was a car wash that killed it, but it wasn't a wide known issue then).

I had my M2 tinted 4 week ago and completely forgetting about the AMP and Water issue. Anyway, it's been a month since i've had it tinted and zero issues (guess I got lucky).

Am I the only one who thought "Prophylaxis" was one of the medicines they're testing for the coronavirus?

For anyone interested, BMW sells a splash guard for the amp 65152715205

Just as suspected... a couple millimeters in the well there. My towel and amp remain dry!

Lost my amp when tinted. "Coincidence", and covered under warranty.
But a splash guard cover, like they maybe know that something could get in this electronically sensitive area?!

They know. It became a soft recall or bulletin. Forget which

Yea, getting it covered for free is always sweet, just know, a new amp requires them to reprogram the vehicle's software, causing it to lost all your FDL coding or possible flash tune.

I can't seem to find a picture of this cover. I might try and do something about that vent, maybe make it so the flaps don't open.

Thanks man! Looks like he taped up those vents. Probably a good idea considering the case of the amp has a ton of holes. Doesn't look like that splash guard would do much.

I'll need to order that splash guard too seeing my warranty is up in the coming months. Anyone know why there's a vent there to begin with before I go and tape it up?

It probably builds up a lot of heat and that's the ventilation.. I suggest, for good measure, you disconnect the power completely, if you're going to temporarily, cap off the vents.. Heat kills electronics and can possible become a fire hazard, if those pieces become overheated. I'm sure how much juice they push.

You obviously will have no audio and a bunch of error codes but once you're done, remove the wrap and plug everything back up, everything will go back to normal. That's how BMW logic works; they're like a baby, once you give them what they want, they STFU..

That's the best way to go about it. I had some BS bodyshop, that I only choose because they agreed to eat my $1,000 deductible, for an accident claim.

The grease monkeys they had working on my car, didn't secure the Comfort Access module, from liquid exposure and as a result, fried out the computer, when they were replacing the quarter panel. #CheapLabor

I had no key fob response and it was a bitch to make right. It can become a headache, when you don't think things out. It's better safe than sorry and risk having to deal with any blowback.

+1

Yup the HK amp is known to run extremely hot and there have been threads about it overheating and shutting off when running aftermarket upgraded subs. So it is probably not a good idea to completely shut those vents.

Btw I have never seen those vents in person since I haven't gotten a chance to pull apart my car, but how sizeable is the gap to the outside?

In my first post I put a picture of my hand opening up one of the flaps. They're pretty sizable, but they open from the inside, so I don't know how easily stuff gets in from the outside. I did find pebbles and dirt under my amp for what it's worth.

Does it go directly outside or is there any barrier?

I'm not sure, I'll investigate more when that splash cover arrives.

I believe the C has the splash guard. When I reinstalled my amp today I definitely noticed some evidence of water droplets on the case, little water spots. Sketches me out, splash guard on the way.
