I am assuming your angle to look at "best" is to have the fastest track time, so GTS you have it. Should you think twice what M badge has really been meaning all along and what bimmers have long yarned for, you tend to agree probably the video just brought the least wrong answer. |

Although I much prefer the F80, one drive in the F87 will make you want it - cheapo sport seats and all.
Especially with a proper 3 pedals. |

From that list; as a DD the M2 please...and a e46 M3 CSL with AP brakes on the side for the track
The 4-doors M3 with competition package looks to be a nice car, but I have bad memories of the normal M3/M4 and I don't like my DD car to be that big...the perfect carsize for me is the e46....and now the M2. For the price of a new M2 I could also buy a used M3/M4 with low mileage...much preffered the M2. M4 GTS is realy cool....but for that amount of money I would prefer a GT3 or GT4.

Of course it's all about personal preference. Alike the choice of partner: "The best" ? Not quite. "The best for me". Yes. Impossible to define "best". You won't get closer than just a very personal list with many boxes that can be ticked, each box awarded with an individual value (what matters much for you, might matter less for me, and vice versa). And the comparo ? See for example here for a point of view (not the ultimate point of view): "The BMW M2 and M4 share some similar DNA, but they’re pretty different cars. The brand-new BMW M2 is much smaller, has less power and is slower than the BMW M4. It’s also around $10,000 cheaper to start. But that isn’t to say that the BMW M2 is the poor man’s BMW M4, because it isn’t. The BMW M2 makes 365 hp and gets from 0-60 in about 4.3 seconds, so that’s nothing to laugh at. The M2 is for an entirely different customer, one that would choose the M2 over the M4, regardless of money. That type of customer that grew up loving compact sportscars and to whom the sheer driving experience is at the top of the preferences list. That’s because “smaller, less powerful and slower” doesn’t tell the whole story. The M2 might be all of those things, but it’s also lighter than the M4, by anywhere from 55 to 200 lbs – depends who you ask – and more nimble, making it more fun on winding roads. It has sharper steering and a more tossable chassis. The BMW M2 is the car for people who prefer the E46 M3 to the F82 M4. It’s the car that old-school BMW enthusiasts have been begging BMW for, for what seems like an eternity now. The BMW M2 isn’t going to be cross-shopped with the M4, as it’s a vastly different car with a different focus for different customers. The M2 is inherently compromised in the name of fun and dynamics, as its ride is more uncomfortable and its cabin more cramped than the M4’s, but it’s most certainly more entertaining. So the BMW M2 is built for customers who value fun and excitement over outright performance. The same people who bought an E46 M3 back in the day are the same people who will buy the BMW M2. But that’s not to say that the BMW M4 is worse than the M2. It’s just different. [...] Maybe the M4 is a bit more disconnected than the M2, not giving its driver the genuine sense of feel and connection on the same level as its new younger brother. [...] So if you’re the kind of person who values grin-inducing fun over raw performance and are willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort and usability for it, then the BMW M2 is the car for you."If the M2 would be considered to be "a jack of all trades" (compromise package for handling urban/extra urban/track/mountains), well then it's probably "the best jack of all trades" for many right now. And it's still possible to get your hands on one. But then again, that's something else than "the best" as (vague) axiom.

The Best M3 for me is the E92 M3 Straight Engine none of that Turbo Crap. But if I had no choice at all the M2 would be the choice because I've driven all of them on the LimeRock Track and the M2 was the best one

Most fun M car currently for sale. Does that mean it's the "best"? Who cares? Step away from the keyboard, get in your car and drive. Just for the fun of it.

I'm curious what blew you away? The reason I'm asking is because I felt the opposite and I actually didn't like my F80 mainly due to the driving feel. It was an impulsive purchase due to the spec, utility and was blinded by the torque/power during the test drive.

A mate of mine drove the M2 as well (E92 and F80 M3 owner) and was disappointed.

Imho there is only one big plus (and it's a big one) the M4 has vs M2 and that's the torque/power from >6000 up to 7500 rpm. The M2 doesn't have that. Just stay below those numbers, then you have the 'best'M car atm.
M4 GTS anytime off course, in white please(or whatever colour), and no not a GT3 in that pricerange. I think on track the M4GTS feels way more balanced/playable for me than the GT3(M4 front engine rwd layout) And I like a bit of torque and save money for a 488GTB Cheers Robin |

But I actually enjoyed driving the M2 a lot. WAY more than the F80/2. Not more than my e46 (albeit a very not stock e46), but if I were buying one of the two, at the same price point, it would be the M2 in a heartbeat. Much as I'd dump my e39 M5 without a second thought, if forced to choose between it and my e46 M3. It's just too big to truly drive hard. Actually, quite an apt analogy, since the e39 is very M3/4 sizes and the e46 is very M2 sized...
