Woke Up This Morning.....

And went for a drive because I was bored. Didn't have anywhere particular to go or anything to do, just didn't feel like being at home.

Ended up @ BMW of Ridgefield 50 miles away from my house to see if they had an M2C in stock to take a look at. Didn't call ahead or check online, just decided to stop by.

They obviously didn't have an M2C in the showroom, but I decided to ask anyway, and they confirmed they didn't.

But what they did have was 1 open allocation for May/June delivery.

So...........I put a deposit down.

Drove home after doing all the initial paperwork, and halfway home it sunk in that I just ordered a new MY2020 M2C.

I'm usually not impulsive at all, but I've had a rough few months and wanted to do something nice for myself.

My Spec:

LBB
Exec Pack
6MT
Moonroof (hey don't hate hehe)
Black 788M
Black/Blue Stitching
CF Trim

I'm actually learning to be less "planned out" and be a bit more impulsive. Feels good.

One time I forgot my gym shoes on my way to the gym with a coworker, so we went to the dealership and I bought a Corvette. We still joke about it 5+ years later.

Congrats on the purchase!

awesome!! if i may offer a suggestion, purchase the Ultimate Care+. For $600, it'll cover the brakes and clutch - parts and labor. well worth it, in my opinion.

Exact same spec as me. You will not be disappointed!

The moonroof is legit, super nice in this car and will help you enjoy it more. Don't listen to the trolls talking about helmets and all sorts of other nonsense. Moonroof will help resale as well

I can relate way too much to the impulse (or close to) buy.

Three recent times:

Last Spring I had been an eyeing the Shelby GT350, wanted to start a small Turo fleet and that would be my showcase car. Here in CA they were all marked up and very little deals to be had. One late night I expanded my search on Cars.com to Nationwide, low and behold a white with blue stripes new 2018 GT350 in a small town of Texas for $3k below MSRP, I was shocked. Called them first thing in the morning to confirm it was real and flew out later that day to buy it, drove home back to LA which was a great road trip that I will never forget.

Last summer I was lazy and didn't want to go the gym so went down the rabbit hole of looking up new 6-spd M2's sitting on the lots in my area, saw a nicely spec'd one. Wasn't really considering one seriously but I could throw it into my mini Turo fleet and hopefully it would at least pay for itself. Submitted my credit app and a few mins later the sales guy who I've actually bought twice from called me, told me I was approved and if I buy today he would give me 0.9% financing since he would sell it to me as a "demo," just had to go put 300 miles on it first (1st world problems). 2 hours later I was driving away in the new M2.

Then the third time was 2 days after Christmas this past December, had put some spirited miles on my buddy's M2C and had it bouncing around in my head as I kept building it on the BMW site multiple times a day...thought I would maybe shoot for a spring/summer Euro delivery if possible. Well went down the rabbit hole again, looked what 6-spds were sitting around in So.Cal, and what do you know, the exact spec I wanted was 2 hours south of me in San Diego. Called the dealer, some guy had backed out of his order a few days before and they would sell me it for MSRP if I moved on it. So hop on the train and by that evening I'm driving back to LA in my new M2C.

Since you have both the M2 and M2C how would you compare them?

The M2C is definitely a noticeable improvement, it deserves the Competition badge. I've written about the pluses of it on here before, the OG M2 people will then argue with me but here it goes again:

1) Suspension- Yes I know the part numbers are the same on the shocks but whatever updates or tweaks they did do, may it be alignment or rebound, etc. it's noticeably more compliant and has less of that pogo up and down feel. It actually is more comfortable and overall more composed.

2) Steering- They tuned it to be more natural in weight and turn in, less artificial resistance. The wheel is a bit thinner too which allows for a bit more feedback.

3) Seats- I like the OG M2 seats for longer distance better but the M3/M4 seats do hold you in more effectively.

4) Brakes- They are obviously bigger but I don't notice a dramatic difference, probably because the S55 is faster and it all balances out, I presume they can take more abuse on the track.

5) Engine- The S55 is a big jump up, not necessarily in overall straight line speed (though it's better) but how it operates. It's far more responsive to the initial toe-in, better tractability in the high revs, the engine itself has a nice mechanical sound as you wind it out- a bit metallic like a S54 (I have ASD off) and one surprising thing for me was its tuning.

Unlike my past 2015 M3 that would just dump full boost at low revs, this one actually "throttles" the boost far better and makes you have to rev it out. I actually am a fan of the S55 now, in its earlier form I didn't care for it much. Also somehow the engine itself (not exhaust) has a better sound in the M2C than my past 2015 M3 or the OG M2 for that matter.

6) Shifter/Clutch- This feels better, I presume because it's the twin-disc clutch from the M3 as the engine revs more freely. Also the shifter feels more direct, there is a surprising amount of NVH that comes through it compared to the OG M2. You can see it vibrating at idle.

7) Styling- Subjective but I actually like the OG M2 front end more. I find the wheels cool on the M2C though as well as the color Hockenheim silver.

Thanks for the write up. I keep wrestling with the idea of upgrading to one. Might be best to hold out until the new m3s hit and see how people like them and if that puts price pressure on m2c cars if they sit on lots or they hit the used market.

I'm also eying 2019s that are sitting on the lot currently for over a month now.

I say just do it buddy, seems like you've been wrestling with this for awhile.

M2c is a step up in just about all aspects.

There aren't a lot of 2019s sitting on lots in CA, but they can be found.

The new M3 is going to be a massive boat. Would I rather have 500hp as on the M3? Yeah that would be nice but not if it means an extra 2 feet in length

Oh I'm not waiting for the M3 for me, but I think it will take attention and take hype away from the M2C.

Agreed with this. One huge factor of why I prefer the M2C is the small size.

When I was at the dealer yesterday I saw the new G20 and was shocked at how large a 3er has become. It's like the size of an E60 5er now.

New M cars are getting increasingly bigger, and I bet you the next-gen M2 is also going to increase in size.

Gigantic cars just aren't my thing.
