N55 Milltek downpipe review

I got this DP as it is euro six compliant and no markup for the same HJS cores as the akrapovic.

The box and downpipe itself say 'made in Germany'. The leaflet stating its an equivalent OEM part so does not need to be declared which I like. When you compare to the stock DP in fairness stock is not too restrictive but as expected on eye-balling it its 50% more open than the stock one, you can see light through it while on stock you can't.

I had it fitted for me inc new gasket and x1 clamp for one hours labour cost.

You can see it in the engine bay and it looks slightly different to stock in that the main casing has a silvered bobbly finish vs stock dull metal.
Straight away the car has a louder cold start, after the main event there is a more prolonged louder deep bass tone that is quite pleasing.
We fired it up outside (engine was already warm from road testing) and drew a fair amount of attention in the industrial park at Darren Wood in stockport!

All drive modes are louder, before comfort would never give burbles and you can occasionally get them now in this mode. Traction mode is ridiculous and only use it sometimes however it is so addictive letting off the power and hearing thunder Do this in a city centre and it's like you are a steerable storm cloud!

Sport and sport + you can now get more reliable burbles as the stock DP only just lets them through. What you notice however is higher up the revs the car taking on a more exotic sound.
The car seems more responsive low down/develops torque slightly earlier in rev band and a noticeable mid range boost in power too. I also quite like when you are heavy on the throttle and changing gear with the manual, you get this sort of back pressure relief sound going on sounds really cool. Much better than a DSG fart but sort of the manuals equivalent if that makes sense.

It lets out the occasional bang which i'm normally not a fan of and only in traction mode when reving it but rest assured I do not like the chav sound and this mod is better with the stock exhaust than 2k+ on an aftermarket IMO.
Only caveat is occasionally when on the power you can get a transient metallic ring/resonance sound that sounds like its coming from the rear seats. I have seen others report this too with sports cats on the M2 so am not worried and really it only happens sometimes when you're on the go, not in normal cruising.

No CEL light. Recommended

I just put on the HJS 300-cell DP, which is essentially the same thing.

Nice additional punch, and it’s surprisingly not much louder inside the car with no drone. With the windows down it’s a bit louder when you’re on the throttle with a slight additional rasp and crackles & pops on overrun.

Def a great upgrade for people that want added hp and minimal NVH impact for road trips & whatnot.

Mine has gotten a little louder now that it’s broken in. Sounds great.

Funny thing is, above 70mph the car is quieter in Sport mode, vs Comfort mode. I have ASD coded off.

Might be the exhaust flap closing - the ECU does crazy things with the flap based on RPM/MPH - I just pulled out the fuse (on a cold start) so that it is open all the time!

Didn't know that you can do that? Any issues if you pulled the fuse and which one is it?

Turn the ignition to run and don't start the vehicle. Hit the traction control button once. Partially depress the gas pedal and let it up. Start the vehicle. The exhaust flap will stay open while you drive.

I’m running OEM burble and flap settings in BM3. Def was quieter in Comfort vs Sport on the highway with the stock DP.

Comfort is still quieter around town, but Sport is actually pretty quiet now on the highways. I’m guessing it just has to do with differing exhaust pressure and resonance with the new DP.

Nice review. Makes me want to pick one up. How much does one of these cost? I know the akrapovic ones were too pricey for me.

If you’re in the US, you have to get it here or a Fabspeed dealer: https://www.fabspeed.com/bmw-m235i-f...tted-downpipe/

Message Fabspeed and they’ll likely give you forum member pricing.

Is this thing essentially the same at the Akrapovic?

I know what you mean! I let of throttle right after a few aggressive shift on full power today and got the SHOTTY! Love it! I was in DSC off tho.

But I wouldn’t mind that more often along with more tone. And more flow.

Nice review.. the transient metallic sound kind of bothers me, though. Do all of you hear it? Any idea what causes it? How annoying is it?

It’s just more turbo whine. My X1 has the same thing, just not as loud.

Based on the revs, it would be annoying if you set your cruise around 60-65mph (7th gear DCT), but I’m usually a bit higher than that and the noise isn’t as bad.

I haven't heard the metallic ring sounds since it was first installed. Maybe its a brand new thing so I wouldn't worry about it.

I believe you stated you got this from Fabspeed, correct? I can only find information regarding their 200 cell DP, not the euro 6 300 cell DP. Did you buy it direct from Fabspeed or did you go through a distributor?
