Tires recommendations

I need 265/35/18fronts 285/35/18rears. Really want the ps4 tires but its on backorder right now. I track my car 3 times a year and mostly canyon runs.
Any other tires alternative? Could also run 295/30/18 on rears.
Thanks!

Do you drive in rain?
Is cost a consideration?
Do you care about wear?
Is weight important to you?
Is comfort important to you?
Is noise important to you?

The PS4S is an all-around Summer tire, but if you're mostly running canyons and don't drive a lot in the rain you can do much better.

Yeah, you're not going to beat the PS4S given your needs. Just be patient.

Not at all.

The two things you need to look at when considering how long a tire will last (just generally) are the treadwear ratings and starting tread depth.

With treadwear ratings the higher the number the harder the compound and the longer it'll last. The PS4S is 300 and the A052 is 200. 200 tw tires are really track day tires.

Then there is tread depth, literally how much meat is on the tire. The PS4S is 9.5/32nds, and the A052 is 7/32nds.

So the PS4S is a harder compound and has more meat as well.

If you're looking for something NOW that you'll probably love, try the Firestone Firehawk Indy. The tw is 340 and the tread depth is 10/32nds. They don't have the ultimate grip of the PS4S, but they are great in the rain, last MUCH longer, and work extremely well as a daily driver. I love the set I have, and I'm about to get another set for a different set of wheels.

They also look the business..

I'll throw BMW Star Spec Michelin Pilot Super Sports and Continental ExtremeContact Sport as two other options that are excellent on the street, wear well, great in the rain and will handle the occasional track day just fine.

I love the star PSS. Unfortunately, they get noisy very quickly, don't do well in rain, and don't wear well. This is literally why Michelin created the PS4S. They'll work, but for the dollar spent it'd be crazy to choose them over the PS4S and then be stuck with the fronts when the rears wear out 3 times as fast.

The Conti ExtremeContact Sport is a great tire, and great recommendation.

You can see by the specs that the Conti and Indy are very close in spec. The Conti is more expensive, but it's also lighter.

Wow, that's a lot of weight difference right where it matters.

Yes, and no.

Less rotational mass is always good, but you'd have to be a god to see a difference on track, and you'd never see it on the street. The heavier tires tend to have more tread as well, so they last longer.

They use the Contis at the performance center in Grier, SC if that's meaningful for anyone.

Likely reasons are that BMW already has a deal with them, they're much less expensive, and have better availability.

Also, he's looking for 18's, and in his sizes Conti only has the UHPS DWS06, no MPS.

If you are set on that size, I would go Hankook rs4 based on your needs. They will have more grip than ps4s in the canyons, will be faster and more durable on track, they are the longest lasting 200tw tire(very popular endurance racing tire), work well enough in the wet(not as good as ps4s here), and are reasonably priced.

If you are willing to go down to 275/35 in the rear I would also consider falken rt615k+. They are also a great track/street tire and very reasonably priced.

Great tire, but you'll need to be very careful in the rain for sure, and certainly don't expect them to last. I love that tire though.

Best price I'm seeing on them so far is through Costco. Pains me that I got a nail in one. Tires at 3/32 so I'm replacing, but they still have some life. Wondering I should save them so I can create a spare when needed.

If you're not using them on track then you're fine

I think I'm saving at least 1 front and 1 rear. That way I can quickly create a spare to run around on. Costco takes a while to get tires vs tire rack can get them next day. Costco doesn't do road force balancing, but I like how they don't have a revolving door of staff and everyone seems to care about what they are doing.

He also said that Michilin $150 sale likely next month. Bring my receipt in and they'd apply the refund since it's within 30 days.

Costco also has the 5yr puncture warranty (pro rated of course). Tire rack (2yr) BMW (1yr)
