2019 M2 Competition - Drivetrain Malfunction!!!

Ok, so here is what happened.

I have a 2019 M2 Comp, 6MT. Not even for 2 weeks yet. 171 miles.

I have been driving very meticulously to follow BMW break in period procedure. Not exceeding 5500 RPMs, not faster than 106 MPH, and driving at varying speed/gears. (not much hwy driving)

Anyways, I go to take her on a cruise yesterday, and start her up as always. And almost immediately I received "Drivetrain malfunction" error on the idrive screen! I let it idle, and sounds fine the whole time, and then the error goes away. I decided to go ahead and drive it to the gas station see how it runs. Runs perfectly fine, not even in limp mode as the error is gone. I bring her back home and let her sit for a couple hours and go into sleep mode. I got back out and start her up and the same dang error pops up and I'm able to get a picture this time.

Well at this point, I do not want to drive it. I want to be sure everything is good and not to make things worse. I tried the BMW teleservice, but not really sure what that even does, but it just stuck on "starting teleservice" and then went to "service ended".

I try to use my programs to read the codes, but none work as they are all for E series BMW. I was able to track down ISTA-D and get it installed. Fault codes are showing 20A203 (Auxilary coolant pump for charge air cooler: Signal implausible) and 20A503 (Turbocharger coolant pump: Signal implausible)

Going to try and setup a service appointment to get it fixed. Looks like might be minor to reseat the coolant pump sensor? or maybe replace it if does not respond.

Just a heads up for everyone.

Common on brand new BMW, low battery from long shipment.
If you happen to have batt-tender put it over night or take it to dealer

You think a low battery would cause codes specific to coolant pump? Did you see they have a service bulletin for this common issue?

Charge cooler water pump isn't the end of the world. but there is an auxiliary coolant pump that cools the turbocharger after the engine turns off and you have a code for that as well so yeah probably a good idea not to beat on it until it gets fixed you can drive it like a normal human to the dealer though. The turbo pump is only there if you turn off the car for if the turbos are still very hot.

I did and they are moving it up the chains at BMW. They are wanting to check the ground, signal, and power pins to the pump. Only threw the code twice so far.

Right, universal warning on the idrive to the driver. That is why I read the codes to know specifically what was going on.

When I take it back, they are wanting to test the ground, signal, and power pins on the wiring to the coolant pump. When I picked it up on Sat, they said they were able to activate the coolant pump with ISTA successfully. I have been driving the car pretty easy, but doubt it will be even 100 miles by time I have it back to them.

I get the sense of panic we all get when our brand new car has a problem but really this isn't anything to give a "heads up" about. Drivetrain Malfunction is the catch all alert for just about any problem that a BMW has that needs to be addressed. Car is under warranty, BWM will fix it.

Just do not let them test drive the car. Tell your SA this and mark down your miles. Report back what they find/replace.

Oh I am somewhat known at this dealership. Also I request a specific mechanic that I trust with my car there. They also know not to "detail" or wash my car.

Ok guys, sorry for the delay on the update. I had the PPF and ceramic coating done and was not able to get another apt scheduled until Tuesday this week. I just picked up the car.

They tested the pins on the coolant pump. Everything was good and I have not received the error since 181 miles. I'm over 400 miles now. They opened a case with BMW and they had a software update they performed to possibly address this. Info attached. No more fault codes!

I had the same on my 2017 M2 last week. They told me not to worry as the computer indicated just to delete the error. 12th of October I am going in for a software update.

Drivetrain malfunctioning error. I don't know which codes as I don't have an OBD tool at my disposal.
