I had the same thought. The depth of field is either extremely shallow or it is synthesized in the digital darkroom. The pink blooms are in focus on the left but blurred on the right. It could be that the depth of field is so short that blooms on the left are in the same plane as the car?

That's exactly it, the DOF is super shallow. The lens is a 200 f2 on full frame, and when focused on the front of the car, anything around that plane will be more in focus, and the further forward or behind that plane will be more out of focus.

I was wondering how your photos turn out like that. I know a tiny bit about photography but nothing I shoot comes out looking as like.. Crisp or smooth as yours. So were you shooting at f/2? Wouldn't that make the back half of the car out of focus? I'm assuming you're combining photos in post?

Actually... it's the principal behind portrait mode. You just don't have control over the DOF in portrait mode and it uses 2 lenses or software to implement the effect.

As much as I love technology, I don't believe there will ever be a convincing way to fake shallow DOF correctly. To ride a horse you need a real horse .

Of course, I was joking. . . we might be getting close with the iPhone, but I am sure a professional photographer such as yourself still requires a quality camera. Not to mention, well, professional skills

I know you were joking, but I figured you'd like the true explanation anyway.

I remember years ago, when CD's first came out. The sound quality was amazing, and played on a real stereo, one the likes of today you NEVER see, oh it was bliss.

And today what do people listen to music on? Trash speakers on their trash computer with their trash MP4 file cut down to be as small as possible?

And the same is true with the phone and pictures. As I said, I know technology is fantastic, but a real camera with a real 200/2 can't be, and won't be faked...and nor will viewing it 7000 pixels wide on a 36" high def screen.

I almost feel bad for giving you guys these pix at 1920 wide, but I must, otherwise they will show up for sale on various sites.

That's the width of the picture on the top edge, 1920 pixels wide for viewing on most normal 24-27" monitors. It's a tiny pic, like a thumbnail compared to viewing on my monitor.

I think it's just the picture itself, the combination of things. I call it stacking goods to make a great.

good focus
good background
good processing
good angle
good subject

= great result

The only difference between me, a normal person, and top level photographer is that they play at a different level.

= fantastic result


And the only difference between them and a video game/CGI is that the video game plays at the highest level, so...

fantastic focus
etc...

= epic result

All of the yellow is vinyl. You can't see it here but there is also some on the diffuser. Basically, it's PPF with vinyl accent over and the ceramic over it all.
