I have basically all the costs calculated, but there's one thing maybe the community can help me out with...

Does anyone know if BMW have a design patent for this M3/M4 side mirror? It looks like they have put design patent on several of the side mirror designs!! I can't seem to find patent information on the M3/M4 one though...

IF there's no design patent attached, then I'll be able to come up with a prototype in about 45 days...

Yes, they have a design patent for the M3/M4 style mirror...

Gonna visit a patent attorney to see if there's way around it...

what specifically is the patent on? Design?

I would think that by having to combine the bracket(triangle door piece) shape from the M2 with the mirror shape of the M3/4 that would yield a technically new design...

That's exactly what I am trying to look into now... need to discuss with a patent attorney first.

Lol. You mad? I actually bought two sets of covers. One from eBay for $65 and one from AutoID for $175. Both are utterly horrendous quality. I can't believe I paid that much money thinking the AutoID ones were as good as people said. They'll stay on the car until someone can tell me where to buy real M mirrors.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll be deleting the bookmark to AutoID mirror caps. I was hoping they were better quality.

The AutoID ones feel more substantial but the drivers view of the cover is terrible and that's all I see when I'm in the car! Basically looks just like these cheap eBay ones except glossed over in black. You can see the mold, grooves and whatever other imperfections. The front side is slightly better but not $175 better. I emailed them but no response. Ughhhh.

I bought both too, knockoff probably from same guy as I ordered it from the States.

Nothing good to say about the knockoff (bad paint job, deformation, not perfect fit etc.)

Autoid are pretty good though. Ordered them completely painted (in and out) in OEM BSM paint and the outcome is very nice. Can post a pic if you're interested!

I'd be curious to see them lop00 . Front on and what you see from the driver seat.

I'd be bugging out if I had to stare at that every time I was in my car F87LUV

Haven't installed them yet but here's a side by side comparison

(Ignore Potato picture quality and smudgy finger surface)

Yeah mine don't look like that. They look like this but glossed over in black- with the mold imprints visible.

There is the possibility to make the m style mirrors for M2, but I am assessing the demand...

The investment is pretty big, so unless I can do a few hundred sets... I won't be able to recover all the tooling (mold) costs. I need to keep the cost down for people as well and it won't be just the cover, it won't do the job.

Exchange program if this is going to happen because there's no way to purchase the wireharness nor the controller unit alone.

Any estimate?

I'd be willing to pay up to around 500$ if it is well designed.

I am afraid it's gotta be higher. The M3/M4 mirror lens from BMW alone cost about $600 for the pair...

I'd be happy to pay whatever you would reasonably think of charging assuming it's an OEM fit/finish.

Put me down for a pair.

Thanks again for the support, but I seriously need a descent demand (500 sets or so) to price it right and to recover the investment associated with this. Oh and of course this will be OEM fit and quality

Trying to gather more demands from various countries first to make this happen. The proposed design will also be able to go on the regular 1,2,3, and 4 series... which might make this possible.

But keep in mind, it has to be done by exchanging your OEM mirrors because of the wiring harness and controller.

Realistically what price are we talking about?

The 3er and 4er can just use the OEM mirrors so that is no market unless its well under the price for them.
