M3 CSL vs M2 Competition: almost identical genetic code (Autocar review)
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com But to drive these coupés back to back and discover an almost identical genetic code is joyful. BMW M GmbH hasn’t always got things right of late, but today’s stars are what its cars should be all about: palpable balance, abundant but not overbearing power, control and the agility that comes with a modest footprint. And soul. I'd take the E46 M3 CSL anyday

wouldn't mind owning either one. would be hard to pick between the two. Ive never driven a CSL but everyone who has seems to say it is amazing and you dont see much to any negative things ever said about it which shows how special of a car it was

Even by today's standards the e46 CSL is a top performer. I don't think many cars produced since then can pull off 1.4g on the skid pad.
I'm happy BMW M is sticking to it's core values with the F87. Hopefully the trend will continue.

The SMG transmission is its apparent downfall. By all other accounts, the car is near perfect. Unfortunately, that problem seems to be glaring. A 6MT example might have been worth more today than its original price.

Never realized how many design elements that the 2 has that look similar to the E46 coupe/vert until now, especially in the side profile and kink, a modern interpretation of a classic. Still seems the best 3 series you can buy is actually a 2 series.

Am I the only one who is thinks it's absurd that the m2 is more than 500lbs heavier than the e46??

The normal E46 M3 has a curb weight of 1,549kg in US spec which is not too much less than the US M2 depending on who is reporting the numbers. The CSL is crazy light compared to the standard M3, the trunk floor is cardboard, roof is carbon fiber, etc |

There's almost 15 years of technology advancements between the two cars, you would think weight savings would be a huge part of bmws R&D for this car but clearly not

I didn't know they made a red M2. Looks very nice. Wouldn't mind one for the right price
