Did anyone read the BMW press release on the m240? They clearly say that the n55 is dead. Would be great if someone could dig that up and post it.

That's it... I'm selling this old rust bucket! Anyone want a '17 M2 with less than 1,000 miles?

Going to go buy an Audi A4. Those don't seem to have changed much in the last 30 years...

See here: here (Bimmerpost) and here (BMW PressClub).

No word about (the fate of) the N55 in those docs (though the M2 is very likely the last car that got the N55).

This is for a specific variant called the CS which I am almost sure will cost 90 to 100K...
As hinted before: base M2 versus M2 €$.

BMW part # 51 14 1 816 995 (E9 CS badge) might become popular again after more than four decades...

No one knows which engine is under that hood. However, one thing that I am willing to bet on is that there are more ponies under that hood. Why? Because of the competition.

As stated by Karmic Man, the 2018 Audi RS3 is finally coming out next summer (*cough cough* when the 2018 M2 LCI will come) producing around 400hp. It will have 5 cylinders opposed to 6, which means better fuel efficiency. Link to 2018 Audi RS3 info: http://www.caranddriver.com/news/201...dan-spied-news

So BMW really has to look into upgrading HP and fuel efficiency. Now whether that means tuned-N55, or de-tuned S55, or even tuned-B58 remains the question. Which engine would increase HP and improve fuel efficiency without increase the base price much? That engine could be the answer.

And yes, the base price will not go up by much, as BMW will have to stay competitive in the market. Remember, the M2 doesn't have the additional luxury of the BIGGER M3/4 (less plastic/more leather interior vs M2, carbon fiber roof, M-leather bucket seats, richer leather (soft touch) vs cheaper leather (rougher touch) in M2, m-mirrors, etc.) So don't think a change in engine makes the car increase $10K!!

M3/4 will get their HP increase eventually as well. BMW tends to spread upgrades very well. Don't think if the M2 gets a bump, the M3/4 won't. Impossible.

Only time will tell the official engine and specs...

S55 M2 would be awesome. Whether it's LCI M2 or a special edition M2 is the big question. Hopefully the former as the price for any special editions is usually through the roof.

Relax everyone! Let's not get too far ahead. We know for sure that we will have a variant of M2 and it is highly likely a MY 2018. What we don't know is if the N55 M2 will be decommissioned after 2017 and everything on this topic is speculative at this point.

Guys, I still prefer the N55 sound and power delivery. If you plan to own the car for a long time and keep it like a collectible then better to stick to a more reliable engine, IMO.

The S55 is plagued with bearing issues. Look up all the threads on M3/M4 forums. The slightly de-tuned S55 might be more reliable but only time will tell. Also the B58 engine is yet to prove if it is a reliable one.

Well, I am only interested in cosmetic and other upgrades on the LCI (like sunroof, better interior quality, maybe new colors?). All other stuff will be extras for me.

I ended up emailing the dealer asking more info, here's the reply:

"Good morning,

If you are interested in an M2 we currently have a waitlist with 5 Orders waiting for allocation; you would be 6th on our list.

As far as the M2 CS...we have no information and no confirmation from BMW that the CS would even be built...no information about pricing and we highly doubt that would cancel M2 production because of the CS...it would be offered in conjunction with the regular M2.

Thanks"

Historically, the horsepower of the competition is not something BMW goes out of its way to answer to. Especially mid-cycle.

1M and base M2 = testing the (market) waters.

If BMW M is allowed enough breathing space and funds by BMW to conceive a 'halo car', the final result may be a very interesting M2 variant that will sell out in no time regardless of its stiff price tag.

BMW’s design chief during the presentation of the 2002 Hommage earlier this year:
“So really only the glass and the roof remains from the M2 [on the 2002 Hommage]. The mirrors you’ll no doubt recognise from its BMW M4 big brother. There’s the exhaust from the M235i Racing too, while the rest of the body is pure carbon fibre, built in around six months.
If we are to do a small production run of these,” explains Karim [Karim Habib - BMW’s design chief and the man responsible for the 2002 Hommage], “they’d also be carbon fibre. Because it’s about racing. I don’t know if the people [who might buy one] will be collectors or actually want to take it out onto the racetrack, but I’d like to think they would, because that’s what this car is all about.”
Surely making it out of carbon fibre would make any potential production version quite expensive? “If you see today [at Villa D’Este], the Astons, the Ferraris, the Maseratis and Rolls-Royces that people are prepared to pay millions for, I think it was never entirely sure if people were prepared to pay really big money for BMW. It seems there’s a market for it,” he adds.

True, but then again, the M240i received a new engine with +15HP (335HP) vs the predecessor M235i (320HP).

The +15HP bump for the M240i was low hanging fruit. I wouldn't say it was in answer to a competitor. The M2 would need a 35 HP bump to reach the HP numbers being posted as competitor targets.

I'd add though that the Golf R400 is DOA. VAG killed it because of dieselgate related cutbacks.
