I'm sure this is coming. It's just a matter of when, and for how much!
I hope it's a limited edition and super expensive, so I won't be tempted. |

Speculations from the recorders perspective still. No engine shot right?

Definitely sounds more like the S55 in the video. It would be awesome if BMW changed the engine to the S55 for the MY18 M2.

Not for people who own an M2 with the N55. If this does happen, my car will be for sale immediately.

Would BMW really change the engine like that? Especially for those that waited or where active enough to try and get early allocations? That would suck

Would you expect a hefty price increase if that were to happen?

This is about the 5th post on the S55. Not going to happen in the regular M2, there will be a special/limited edition CSL type M2 with the S55, if you want it be ready to spend near 6 figures.

Make little sense in doing this from BMW perspective:
1) no cost saving - if it's 400hp they want, twisting the turbo a little bit is easier and cheaper. 2) no sales boosting - already sold however many they want to build. 3) seriously cannibalizing M4 sales, even if it's a 80k m2 CS - m4 already comes at 80k mildly optioned. If we are looking at an all out m2 CSL/GTS at 110k - only if BMW is motivated enough to do that - now does the car in the video "sound" like one?

IMO,there is no way that BMW will have two different engines in the MY18 M2.If an M2 CSL gets the S55,so will the regular M2.Remember,the E46 M3 CSL had the same S54 engine as the regular E46 M3.They just twaeked it to increase the horsepower to 360.Who even knows for sure if there will be an M2 CSL.The upgraded MY18 M2 could just have the competition package.

Definitely S55. There is no front mount intercooler behind the lower grill on the front bumper bar.
Don't know why people keeps on having the notion that it will cannibalise sales of the M4. M4 ZCP has 331kw/450hp which will still be faster than the 400hp M2 on the straight. They might make the ZCP standard from MY18 onwards and then further release the M4 CSL. BMW is forward looking. Why shouldn't they increase the performance of their cars as time goes by? Stiff competitions from AMG, Audi and Alfa means instead of freshening every 4-5 years, they do it every 2-3 years. Last edited by Karmic Man; 09-25-2016 at 08:23 PM.. |

Might want to notice that the new c63s has 500 hp. The m4 will need to step up. That will leave more room for the m2. Also, didn't bmw make an announcement with the m240 that they were going to discontinue the N55 engine? Check the press release. Perhaps this isn't such a big surprise. The reason I stopped looking at the m4 was that it was simply too much money compared to other options. The m2 at $10k more isn't such a good option either.

Could it be a GTS or CSL???
It's way to early to expect all bodywork and aerodynamic aids will on a test mule, but, to me, this does not look anything like a Vision GT or a GTS/CSL. Thinking it currently looks like a mildly modified M2 that could be a CS or possibly ZCP.
There was reference in a post to an further progress M4 model similar to an M2 model to keep the gap. That also points away from a GTS and ZCP, as they exist. Time will tell.

Good find! I think it would be pretty rad if they came out with a CS. And I wouldn't be selling mine with the N55.. if I want it to be faster, I'd just upgrade the turbo. Save some $$$

The new B58 in the M240i gives the 2 Series a nice bump in power. It's plausible that for MY2018 they will do something to give the M2 a bump as well. I honestly never considered a detuned S55 as the answer. Thought they would just bump the output of the current engine or maybe a higher output tuned B58, although the latter didn't make a lot of sense from a research and development perspective. That's why I'm intrigued by the idea of a detuned S55. For now it's all speculation; I'll believe it when I see it.

The S55 sounds like an air compressor choking on concrete. I prefer my N55 M2 sound. If I want more power I'll install a Fabspeed sport cat downpipe and an ECU tune.
