I first thought wtf how is that possible however a quick search shows it is sorta common. Some suggest high salt environment can contribute to it also.

Sometimes parts fail, without background its hard to tell why. Maybe a manufacturing defect, maybe the guy took the spring it off the car and left it subermerged in a bucket of sea water for the last three years.

This was common on Z4M's.. and was def salt-related. Springs weren't adequately coated.

Just happened to my M2C.I backed the car out of the garage. Just walking back to the house with the car parked behind me, heard a bang like a gate slamming. Rear drivers side dropped, wheel up in the arch. Car being recovered this morning, not drivable.
Bloody odd… Glad I wasn’t moving at the time. Can’t get under the car to see the spring. |

20k, three years old. Waranty company arguing to just replace a single spring. Very unhappy with that idea, will get both done even if they refuse to pay for it. The spring basically completely dislocated and there was no support to the offside rear after it snapped. Wouldn’t have fancied being moving at the time. Car is completely stock.

This is a real safety issue. I'd definitely have filed a complaint with NHTSA. What coilovers did you go with and how do you like them on Jersey roads vs the OEM setup? |

There's another one on M3 Cutters who may have popped a CV joint/damaged the differential as well after driving it without realising the rear springs had failed.
Maybe jetbill was on to something when he noted that the stock rear springs appeared to be variable rate. |
