Winter Tire Timing - Chicagoland

This will be my first winter swapping wheels and rubber and am currently debating when to pull the trigger and buy my winter set.

When are you guys switching wheels? I'm guessing November but have no clue.

I think I was originally told winter tires Thanksgiving Day to Tax day.

ON: Be ready late October, but sometimes you won't need them to mid-December.
OFF: Mid-March to mid-April.

Let the never-consistent weather be your guide.

Lesson learned: Once the cold takes hold of the asphalt and the soft performance tires turn hard it's time.

Won't be using my M2 in the winter, but the other cars get them installed once the temperatures drop to the consistent mid to low 30's (snow or no snow).

Good point - summer tires turn rock-hard in the cold. Some manufacturers won't even deliver cars with them during the coldest winter months.

Order the tires as early as you can, sometimes deals to be had. You don't want to wait until the last minute and get screwed.

Thanks for all the feedback, I think I'll pull the trigger before the Tirerack winter Tire rebate expires this week. Better to save $80 now than nothing later.

Nov 15th till April 15th (two years ago we got a nice snow on April 17th).

And please buy the OEM winter tire package, the tirerack stuff is so mooch! And you have to look at your car for 5-6 months with cheap wheels/tires - that just sucks, trust me, I did it once

I went with a tire rack setup. Mid-priced wheels with the Michelin Alpin’s. Arrived today less than a day after ordering.

Nice tires. Did you go with 18" square set-up? I am considering these or X-Ice. Any opinions between the two?

I went with the square setup on 18s.

I picked the Alpin?s for better overall handling. The XIce should be better bad weather traction but it doesn?t get that bad here and if it does I?ll stay home.

I'm in the same area, and I always went mid-November to mid-March. You'll be fine with "performance" snow tires around here, as the roads are kept pretty clear.
