I went M2C MT from 2017 M240ix. Didn't do any cross-shopping because the M2C was the type of car I've been looking for but couldn't find before it arrived. Note: I was driving an E46 M3 MT from 2007-2010 (wasn't mine; it was in the family), but it was traded-in for something I don't want to talk about... and I always missed the E46.
I went M240ix over previous M2 because I was driving 40,000km/year and the M2 wasn't too powerful/special at the time (IMO of course). No regrets other than I wish I had kept the 240 for the winter. Nothing beats it in the snow.
Also note: I'm also a big Porsche guy and there are (and have been) many good Porsches around for me to drive. Since getting the M2C I've put maybe 500km on the GT4. M2C is simply way more fun on the road (tail happy and torquey), but you won't get the beautiful GT4 sound or steering feel. I'm not one to take cars to the track, so the GT4 has become kinda useless to me. Maybe if it had shorter ratios it'd be more fun on the road. If I had to trade both in it'd be for a 911 GTS with a stick, but they only come in PDK right now.

The m2c is my first bmw after mostly owning Japanese cars (celica all trac, 350z) and dailying the z for 14 years. I’ve never owned an auto and I never intend to.

I considered a c7 gs (too big, hard to daily, just doesn’t feel right to me) and a cayman (I really hate automotive snobbery but I just don’t want to spend that much on a 4-banger with 300 hp)
Ultimately I’m happy with my purchase as long as the thing stays relatively reliable.

The highs are excellent (power, visibility, packaging/use of space/overall size) while the lows (steering feel, shift feel, turbo lag) are all not that bad. which is to say I’d like more steering feel but feel is still decent, I’d like a more positive feeling shifter but I’ve felt much much worse shifters and the turbo lag is present but minimal.

It’s a very good car if you’re looking to combine a good dose of practicality with a car focused on driving engagement first and speed second.

It feels like the exact mid point between a Miata and a mustang which is exactly what I wanted even if it almost costs as much as both of those cars combined.

I've have had quite a few manual cars in the past. Subaru Legacy Spec B STI 6 speed swap w/650whp, Focus st, Nissan 240sx with SR20 and most recently a Focus RS before the M2C. I went looking at several different cars from the Cayman to the GT350. All had their ups and downs. For me it was about value for money and size. I needed something that I could drive in NYC comfortably. I settled on the Focus RS as I could not find a M2C at the end of 2018. Bought the car in November. By January I was looking for an M2C again. It was a cool car but, felt more gimmicky than a raw AWD sports car like I was used to. STI, EVO IX, X and etc. The interior felt cheap and I wasn't pleased with the power potential for the money. I happened to find my M2C by chance and purchased it in April. So far I have 5200 miles and i absolutely love it. I would like a little more power, a little weight loss but, I think for the money it cant be beat. Even the Cayman GTS with 360hp is overpriced in my opinion VS. the M2C. Of course there is the Porsche tax which I get but, I think the value for money is in the M2C. If I ever get the coin I will be jumping into a 991.2 GTS or GT3!! Until then the M2C is pleasantly enjoyable!

damn, well that is a heck of a M2C endorsement and coming from a history of 981's gives me some real confidence that I will be quite pleased with it. I am not also not a track guy. I can see how the M2C could be more fun on the road, especially in a city like toronto with crowded straight streets. With my cayman S's I was often frustrated trying to find opportunities to really listen to the flat six sing and enjoy some corners without obstructions!

I used to live downtown Toronto so I know the feeling. M2C will certainly deliver more fun at lower speed. Don't get me wrong, the Porsches are amazing vehicles but they are more suited to winding roads, not cities. I've also had passengers drive with me back to back in GT4 then M2C, and aside from the enjoyment of the GT4's rich sound, they have more fun in the BMW and typically make a remark about that.
I should also mention that MDM mode is a hoot, and really fun in the snow without too much risk. With the M240ix I'd typically drive with DSC off and the front wheels would grab whenever I 'got into trouble'.

For me, the M4 wasn’t appealing for some reason.
The chubby proportions with wider (than regular 2,3 series body) fenders is what I liked.
Rear fenders are the same for the 4 series/M4...

What OP wanted in his vehicle:

Here's what seems to matter to me in cars:

compact size
good outward visibility
nice sound
decent low end torque (I don't like cars that need to be revved out, which is why back in the day I chose a mx6 with a torquey v6 over a prelude with the vtec)
good throttle response
minimal turbo lag
decent handling (but I am no track fiend by any means).

Too funny

Back on topic: I forgot to mention I also briefly considered the Golf R and Focus RS, but I had an SVT Focus (loved it BTW, FWIW), and not exactly a fan of VW/Audi's 2.0T in the Golf R. I'd just tired on the hot hatch thing even though there are some damn good ones out there now.

Ok I guess, still doesn't ignore the fact you can't read or comprehend and are so quick to reply for whatever reason. So who seems the one that doesn't have any friends?

The irony.

I was pretty set on the M2C. I still own a 2017 Shelby GT350 that I couldn’t bring myself to trade in at the time. I have the perfect duo for my needs of street driving and track duty.

I have no interest in a Corvette, but would’ve considered a 2016 Cayman S or GT4. I chose to stick with two cars versus consolidating to one.

The M2C is a great dual purpose car and is still underrated in my mind.

yes I have thought about going back to porsche, and that's where I might end up, but I have kinda done the porsche thing (owning 2 981 Cayman S's)

I love the cars, but they are tough to enjoy in a crowded city with straight streets, you need to wind them out to hear the flat six sing and they don't have a lot of low end torque (at least the NA ones don't)

as for the weather well it's Canada so

I WAS getting the new Miata for half the money and the ability to not care where I park it as much (Truly a disposable fun car) great value per dollar imo

My son straight face told me he would burn it if I purchased one... scared of little Miller I got the order going for the m2

He knows I'm a bmw whore, I just needed a little shake to get what I really wanted, the car is overall a great fit for my needs

at 150k budget, a 991.2 Carrea T or 991.2S would fit the bill.

You can get a T with LWB and PCCB for 120-130k.

It was either the 2020 M2C, a used M4 ZCP, or the new Supra.

After searching for 6 months, I only ever found 1 Mineral White ZCP 6MT M4 with the options I wanted, and the dealership sold it out from underneath me TWICE.

I waited for the Supra to be unveiled, saw that it was an ugly pile of dog shit.

And here we are.

Was close to getting a C43 or M340 as I wanted four doors, but really liked my test drive of the M2C and it was hard to give up a manual (had at least 1 manual car in the family over the last 20 years) and the M2C more fun car to drive for the same price as a loaded M340 or C43. I also prefer the old-school interior and iDrive6 of the M2C over the M340's newer style and tech.
