Tint warning

Had my tint done today. 15 percent all around. I warned the guy about the issue with the amp that another one of the forum members had with water ruining the amp during tint. He used as little water as possible. Still got the popping sound. He called my dealership and BMW service people. He was told to leave it outside to dry. Luckily it was hot today. When I arrived he told me what happened. Car was outside for several hours. When I started it there have been no issues I have found yet. Fingers crossed but it can't be a coincidence. So beware of tint complications.

I'm still not sure to be honest.

The solution is to wrap all the cabling and the amp in the rear drivers side quarter panel in plastic before getting a tint? Or just cover fucking everything in plastic? lol.

This seems like a critical design flaw.

So you're saying that having your rear window tinted caused water to get all the way down to damage this amp?

I'm saying that during the tint process water got on some electrical unit causing popping noises. This also happened to another forum member. I don't know the details of what happened because I'm not sure where specific electrical items are in the car. But tint guy described exact same situational as another forum member.

Seems like a high price to pay for tinting

Having never had tints other than sun protection glass where is the water involved? Is it like. Ppf which needs squeegie the water out for bubbles?

my tint appointment is on August 1st. I'm just going to pull out all of my trunk lining and wrap everything in plastic. I'm not taking any chances.

BMWNA MSRP is $1489. Or $1117 at BMW Morristown.

Nope, no water on the inside of course but somehow water still managed to get somewhere and that annoying popping sound started

So you were just washing the outside of the car? Hose or machine wash? Did you have the trunk lid open during the wash? I’m just curious because if nothing was left open I’m wondering if the same thing could happen in the rain?

I think I'm the guy the OP is referring to...

https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1436701

Cliffs Notes: The amp is in a location in the trunk that can get wet when the rear windows are tinted. I would argue this is not a "bad design" per se since BMW does not necessarily design for aftermarket tint compatibility when they decide where to place their amp. Since the top of the amp is vented (open) and the electronic boards are exposed any small about of "tint solution" or water can temporarily or permanantly damage it if it gets wet. You can tell your tint person about the issue and to be careful when tinting the rear window OR you can put a towel or saran wrap the top of the amp prior to tinting. If you don't want to risk it I'd do option 2!

Just got my tint done this week and forgot to warn them about that - I had read this thread prior. Luckily no issues so I either got lucky or they knew about it and took steps to prevent it. They are definitely the top tinting shop here in Austin, so maybe the latter.

funny had mine tinted today and no issues to report. Seems like a design issue, yea they dont design with tint in mind but water should not makes its way in there regardless. JMHO

Can you not just take off the covers and lay some towels or big trash bag over the electrical components?
